Falling Off the Bag Wagon

I awoke to an email from dear friend and contributor, Maura Carlin, directing me to this “Dear John” style letter. She shares her recent, disheartening sentiments towards bags and shopping. Read her thoughts down below. Is anyone else going through this handbag drought?

Falling Off the Bag Wagon

My Dearest PurseBop,

For a time now I have felt as though we have been growing apart. We don’t talk or write often and I am left tending the home fires while you travel the globe with abandon. I do not blame you. It is me. My lack of interest pains my heart. Perhaps I’m just aging and my drive is declining. But it’s been nearly a year . . .

On occasion, I’ve been tempted enough by a saucy new number to give out my (credit card) digits, only to send it packing in the morning. Nothing seems to hold my attention long . . . or long for my attention. In the past month alone, I sent packing this pretty floral bouquet and this hard to get cartoonish beauty, one of the last Elbaz designs for Lanvin.
The printed words were wonderful . . . but actions speak louder and it is on its way back to BG.

Even Chanel (my standard FWB – that is “For the Win Bag“) leaves me without yearning. Another flap or boy is just . . . well, another flap or boy. True, I admired the movie camera clutch but (for me) it’s more fantasy and home decor than reality and certainly out of my league. Same for the soon-to-be-released gift bag. I have truly fallen off the bag wagon.

I do still dream of sharing my first Birkin purchase with you whenever the H gods bestow the right one. It is beyond my control. Meanwhile, I go without . . . not a new bag since Kelly back in October.

The worst part is that I almost don’t care. With so much going on in the world and in this country, it is hard for me to focus on (and forgive me for my brash cruelty) another sac to hold my crap.

On the other hand, I also am plagued by guilt . . . what true and loyal handbag aficionado is immune to the allure of a new purse? I have failed to maintain the sanctity of our relationship and truly apologize.

If you can find it in your heart, please put me back on course.

Love always,
Maura
