Editor’s Update Aug 1st, 2021: What’s Really Going On With Chanel Prices
**Update as of June 25th:
Hold on to your flaps – the latest reports from our sources indicate that the price hikes are in fact on the high end of our estimates and closer to 15% ($400 on mini, $900 on small classic, $1000 for a medium classic, $1100 for a jumbo and $1200 for a maxi)**
Just when we thought it was safe to buy a new 21A Chanel bag this summer, rumor mills are buzzing with news of another huge price increase spanning all of its most popular bags! And friends, this time it is not subtle. Unconfirmed reports suggest the increase on the Chanel classic flap could be as high as 12.5%. Other reports are suggesting an increase in the range of $1,000 usd for the medium sized classic flap currently priced at $6800.
What we do know is that with these new increases, Chanel is likely to exceed the $7500 mark for the medium classic flap and just under $7,000 for the small classic flap. We have also learned that there will be step increases on the Boy bag, possibly in the 10-12.5% range as well. And don’t think the hottest Chanel bag since its release in 2019 will be spared. There will be an increase on the Chanel 19 as well.

The timing of this increase appears very strategic as we all await the release of the new delicious shades for fall 2021. It looks like this time we will be forking out significantly more cash for that coveted classic flap than we did earlier this year.

New US Chanel Bag Prices as of 1 July 2021
Here are the confirmed new prices for popular Chanel handbag styles that have come into effect at stores across the US with effect from 1 July 2021. As reported, prices are up 10-15% across styles, with the prices of more popular classic styles like the Medium Chanel Flap going up as high as 15%!

Effect on The Resale Market
This past weekend we shared Chanel’s current prices of its most popular bags. We speculated whether it was possible to rehome your classic or mini flap bag for a premium and reap the benefits of the lack of supply and incredible demand. Although the resale market has clearly capitalized on Chanel’s multiple price increases, increased demand, and decreased supply, the original purchasers of these bags were not realizing any profit and often lost money.

We shared our personal experiences selling our new Chanel bags to online resellers. We found the resellers unwilling to pay a premium for Chanel bags in the same way they pay a premium for Hermès bags. There is no history of Chanel bags retaining their value at these inflated prices. And there is no data showing the same demand continuing into the future. Without historical data in support, it will take a very long time to establish the true value of Chanel bags at the new increased prices on the resale market in the future.

With this next huge price increase around the corner, we believe the resellers will continue to offer below retail prices for Chanel bags but will list the bags on their sites for several thousand dollars above retail price. The bottom line is there is no history to support resellers paying original buyers Hermès-like premiums for Chanel bags.
Things to Consider
Regardless of the timing or the exact amount of the increases, we can expect all our favorite styles to be affected. Our sources say that increases will begin on July 1st in the U.S. and Canada and will follow throughout other regions of the world over the course of the next week (seems European SA’s are warning July 1st also). Chanel bag prices worldwide will practically be the same price as a Birkin or Kelly purchased in Paris. We ponder, which is the better value in the long run?
