The Hermes Mahjong Set for the Crazy Rich

The pandemic may have hurt the world economy and hampered luxury merchandise spending for many, but it won’t stop the crazy rich from forking over their money for something extra special. And Hermes of course, thinks of almost everything for them! Spotlight today is on Singapore, “home” of the Crazy Rich Asians (CRA) book and movie franchise, and not surprisingly, home as well to many low profile but crazy rich Asians!

Mahjong, a traditional game played in Asia for over 300 years, consists of either 136 or 144 tiles (once made from bone, but now made of bakelite and a mix of other plastics). This game had quite a prominent role in the CRA movie during a pivotal scene, which was also perhaps why Hermes chose to make their version of a Mahjong Set.

But natch, trust Hermes to come up with something extraordinary. Available online for Hermes Singapore customers and priced at a hefty S$57,200 (US $41,850+), the Hermes Helios Mahjong set is made in ebene “solid palissander wood and printed Swift calfskin, [with] tiles in printed full leather.” And while these tiles may not produce the same “noise” as regular mahjong tiles would when shuffled (some call this shuffling, “dry swimming”), they definitely make quite the impression and is undoubtedly a conversation piece.

You don’t have to be a crazy rich Asian to buy this set though, you just have to be crazy rich– besides, you can always learn to play the game later!

So, who’s going to “Add to Cart”?
