Thoughts on Banned Yves Saint Laurent advertisement?

UK’s advertisment standards authority banned this advertisement due to the model looking “unhealthy underweight”. The main complaints came from the visible ribs and very thin legs. YSL did not agree with the complaint, and did not give much of a comment.

Do you agree with the UK ban or is the criticism too harsh?

Hi she does look very thin in this image, but when I was 18 I was naturally that thin and very tall, so I believe if a natural metabolism leads to this look and weight then that is fine, if this girl is starving herself to achieve this then absolutely not, but the problem is we will never know. Thin tall girls gravitate to modelling. When I was 17 I went to a few castings and got some work, but I was sent to one woman in London who said to me that I had to loose my puppy fat!! and then go back and see her, I was so naturally thin anyway and as I was a bit of a rebel and certainly did not care what she said I said no way and I can not be bothered to loose weight,. There is a lot of pressure in that industry and if young girls are not confident and strong enough to know the way they look is just beautiful it is a problem. I would love to hear the view point of young girls to see what they make of this? and how it makes them feel. Thank goodness for Kim K and the rise and popularity of lovely shaped women and that the media embraced her so young girls can show off their beautiful figures xxxx

Well said Kristi ?????? in my opinion the model does look too skinny, but like Kristi said, what if it’s her normal self that is this thin? I have a friend who struggles for not being able to gain weight… She’s healthy and eats normally, but simply don’t gain weight no matter how hard she tries…So each one is each one… Who are we to judge the model without knowing if she’s healthy in her thinness or not, or YSL for casting her? I don’t agree with the ad being banned, I think it’s discriminating.

I disagree but of course in the UK most people will look at this ad and see the girl as “anorexic”. Why? Because obesity is the new normal in the Uk. People would much rather see a McDonalds advert for a burger than a pretty skinny girl.. how dare they do that! Lol

As a human race we truly need to stop this idea of “fat is beautiful”. Fat is unhealthy and will kill you in your later years! Also, please do not confuse fat with curvy – just like you shouldn’t confuse anorexic with skinny(like the model in the ad). Curvy and skinny are equally beautiful and natural. Anorexia and obesity are a sickness.
