We knew it was coming, but sometimes you need to see it to believe it. Not gonna lie, it’s a bit weird. Along with homewares, socks, and laundry detergent, you can add a Hermès Birkin to your Amazon cart.
As of writing, there are five Birkin bags popping up as options when we log in and search. They are listed by or through What Goes Around Comes Around (WGACA), an established reseller of luxury goods. All of the bags are “preloved” – a lovely euphemism for used – described as in “excellent” condition with varying details about scratching, slouching, scuffing and more. And yes, there is only one available of each.
Three of the listings specify B35s, in Ebene Togo, Natural Vache, and Gris Tourterelle Clemence, listed at $15,500, $16,950, and $14,500, respectively. The fourth bag lists as B30 in Rouge Casque Evercalf for $15,500. Lastly, there’s a B40 in Vert Benghal Courcheval for $16,500.
It’s difficult to assess whether the prices are deals or not but generally speaking it’s no surprise to see these five figure tags. However, given that the Amazon listings are by WGACA, you might expect prices to be the same on its own site. Not necessarily. It appears bags are reduced on WGACA’s site. The Rouge Casaque B30 is marked down to $13,950 on WGACA – $1,650 less than on Amazon. Similarly, the Gris Tourterelle B35 is on sale on WGACA’s own site for $13,050, down from the original $14,500. On the other hand, on Amazon the purchase includes free shipping and free return; the WGACA site mentions shipping and other fees being added.
The big question, though, is how do you feel about seeing and buying Birkins on Amazon. Is it a convenience you want or need? Does it devalue the bag, bringing it to “the masses”, despite a price tag few can afford?
