Dear PurseBop:
How does a client qualify for a Special Order at Hermès?
Dear First Timer:
Historically, Special Orders were reserved for VIPs who were loyal to the brand for many years. Some clients were offered the opportunity to write a Special Order each season for consecutive years.
As Hermès became even more popular, particularly after the Pandemic, the demand for Birkins and Kellys grew exponentially making it more and more difficult to satisfy clients’ wishlist requests. As a result, the opportunity to be offered a Special Order was prioritized for “first time clients.” This refers to clients who have shown loyalty to the brand and their SA but who have never been offered this exclusive experience in the past. Since each boutique is individually run, this concept may not be followed by all locations. Ask your SA for their policy with respect to offering clients Special Orders.
Special Orders, also referred to as an Al a carte or Horseshoe stamp (HSS) bag, are offered twice a year. Once in the Spring between February and May. And again in the fall between September and November. A client must adhere to the season’s color choices, leathers listed, hardware offerings, and stitching options available during that time period. Many clients look forward to the release of the new color chart each season hoping their favorite neutral or pop of color is offered that year.
There is nothing specific that needs to be done to qualify for a Special Order. Merely build a solid relationship with your Sales Associate, show loyalty to the brand by visiting the boutique on a regular basis, and purchase items you truly love and will enjoy using or giving as gifts. That is the secret.
After establishing a good relationship with your SA, let them know in a gentle and polite way that you would love the opportunity to one day be considered for a Special Order. Then, as with all things Hermès, be patient and enjoy the process.
