Dear PurseBop:

Which bag is more popular at the present time: the Kelly Pochette or the Mini Kelly?

Dear Mini Bag Lover:

Despite its petite size, the mini Kelly II has ruled supreme among most Hermès collectors for almost a decade since being introduced in 2016. Many have one or more mini Kellys in their collections and use them as evening or event bags, and as a bag that transitions easily from day to night.

The Kelly Pochette first appeared in 2004 as part of Jean Paul Gaultier’s debut collection when he became creative director for Hermès. Considered by many to be the original mini Kelly, it is a smaller version of the iconic Kelly bag, sans the shoulder strap. Its larger interior has made a huge impression on Hermès collectors who yearn for more space in their mini bags. The Kelly Pochette will hold most size cell phones as well as other essential items such as a Calvi, car key, lipstick, and more.

Although some may disagree, as of 2025, we believe the popularity of the Kelly Pochette seems to have surpassed the mini Kelly. Judging by the price of the Pochette on the secondary market the demand has grown exponentially over the past 5 years. Today, expect to pay 3-3.5 times the boutique price in the U.S. The cost of a Kelly Pochette in the U.S. is presently $7,650 (plus tax). The average cost of a Kelly Pochette on the secondary market ranges from $20,000 – $30,000 depending on condition, color, and hardware and more for exotics.

The mini Kelly II in Epsom now costs $10,500 (plus tax) in the U.S. from the boutique. The average cost on the secondary market ranges from 2-3 times the boutique price. Expect to see prices on the mini Kelly II ranging from $20,000-$30,000 depending on the condition, color, and hardware (excluding exotics).

Is there a mini Kelly II or Kelly Pochette on your wishlist this year? Which mini bag do you think is more popular?

I agree – for me the kelly pochette seems more popular today. You don’t see it as much out and about and perhaps that’s leading people to think it’s more rare, more unique and therefore more desirable. People are definitely looking for a roomier bag and there’s something about the pochette that makes it look very chic and more contemporary. There’s obviously people who will always prefer the mini kelly because they need a shoulder strap but I’m currently on the hunt for pochettes over mini kellys. The pochette has a more casual look making it more appropriate for day time than the mini but can then just as easily be styled for evening/events. As it’s mostly found in swift I think this also makes all the gorgeous colours really pop
