Is The U.S. Transitioning to a Wishlist System for Allocating Quota Bags?

Dear PurseBop:

Is the U.S. transitioning to a wishlist system for allocating Birkins and Kellys similar to the U.K. and Europe? How will it change the SA/client relationship and will it be easier or more difficult to be offered a quota bag??

Dear Worried About Wishlist System:

We have heard from many community members that several U.S. Hermes boutiques, including Madison Avenue in NYC, have begun implementing a more structured way of documenting clients’ quota bag preferences. Hermes has not publicly announced the program except through certain SA’s telling their clients that a new system is in the works. SA’s are entering wishlist requests into a standardized digital system rather than relying on personal notes or informal conversations. The program rollout is beginning in select locations this summer before expanding throughout the U.S. in the fall.

The new process is designed to capture a client’s preferences in a consistent format. It appears to function as an internal inventory and client management tool. When a bag arrives boutique management can more easily identify clients whose requests match the incoming inventory. How the bag is then allocated will likely depend on many factors as in the past. It is believed that SA relationship, client’s profile, boutique inventory, and more are all considered in allocating the bag.

The wishlist requests a client to identify the following:

  • One bag style (Birkin OR Kelly)
  • Size Preference
  • Preferred Leather
  • 2 Colors
  • Hardware Choice
  • Expires in 1 year
  • If changes are made it may affect the client’s priority

There is speculation that the changes are an attempt to seek greater   consistency across U.S. boutiques. A centralized wishlist recording system creates a standardized record which may make it easier for managers to allocate inventory more efficiently and (some say) more fairly.

The new system records a client’s preference in a more sophisticated database. Success still appears to depend on patience, consistency, and a strong relationship with your SA.
