Dear PurseBop:
Can you explain the difference between Hermès Volupto leather and the more common Swift leather? Which bags are generally produced in each leather.
Dear Smooth Leather Lover:
Both Volupto and Swift leather are smooth, soft, and showcase color better than most other leathers. Here are the key differences and similarities.
Veau Volupto is a calfskin leather which was first introduced in 2013. It is smooth, soft, and supple, known for its luxurious feel and subtle sheen. It is often described as heavenly soft, buttery, and silky to the touch. It has a delicate satin finish giving a semi-matte appearance with barely visible grains. It is supple, less rigid than Epsom, and may slouch over time. Although not scratch-resistant like Togo or Clemence, it is considered durable and gains resistance as it develops a patina over time. It darkens and becomes shinier in areas most handled, which contributes to its unique character.
It is a rare leather but has been produced in the following Hermès bags:
- Birkin 25 Rock
- Haut à Courroies (HAC) 40 Rock
- Maximoors
- Kelly Danse
- 24/24 bag (in combination with Swift)
Hermès Swift leather is also a smooth, supple calf leather that takes color exceptionally well. First introduced in 2005, it is a popular leather used on smaller bags usually. It differs from Volupto in its finish, structure, and overall feel. Swift is semi-matte with a rich luster that reflects light. It has a natural grain that is also barely noticeable. It is most notable for its ability to absorb dye and showcase bold, vibrant colors with an intensity unmatched by other leathers. Although prone to scratches, light surface scratches can be buffed out with a finger.
Bags produced with Swift leather:
- Kelly Pochette
- Kelly Cut
- Kelly 25 Retourne
- Constance 18
- Jige Elan clutch
- Halzan
- Jypsiere
Volupto is the softer, rarer option with a unique “moist” feel and a satiny finish most commonly seen in black. Swift is widely known for its ability to display extraordinarily vibrant colors and has a slightly more lustrous, yet still semi-matte, finish. Which do you prefer?
