If you’ve been keeping up with the blog posts and instagram updates, you already know Christian Louboutin is in India…and so is PurseBop! PurseBop had the incredible privilege of attending the Christian Louboutin and Sabyasachi Mukherjee collaboration show for the opening of Amazon India Couture Week. This show was truly a momentous feat as Sabyasachi is the first Indian designer to collaborate with the iconic, French footwear designer Christian Louboutin.

Before we get into the nitty gritty, walk through a full overview of the show with some exclusive pictures taken by PurseBop…
The main motif and title of the show was “Bater”, which is an Indian bird of prey. As quoted by Mukherjee,
“Though it is a common bird, it has a lot of resilience and I wanted to bring out a collection which is inspired by hunting birds and prey. I wanted to keep it dark, gothic and sexual but with very fine and intricate embroidery.”
Everything from the styles, colors, and even background music embodied the dark, gothic vibes of an eerie forest. The runway show itself took place in an abandoned mansion adding even more to the ominious, dangerous mood.
Louboutin’s and Mukherjee’s visionary genius comes into play with the overwhelming decadence and intricacy of the outfits. Despite the dark atmosphere, every outfit had a glamorous spark, and featured detailed embroidery and embellishments. The hand embroideries consisted of unique symmetry and geometry inspired from different parts of India such as zardozi, badla ka kaam, and Parsi.
The shoes were the true characters of this collection, and almost like mini works of art themselves. The women’s shoes featured larger than life heels. The iconic Christian Louboutin “Devibroda” shoe was completely hand embroidered and adorned with acid dyed burnt sequins and tea dyed cotton threads. The CL favorite “Victoria” shoe featured Sabyasachi’s standout embroidery – the burnt zardozi and vintage Parsi garra. The men’s shoes were equally as opulent and presented in mostly gold and black tones. The classic Christian Louboutin men’s “Education and Dandelion” shoe was designed with embellishments inspired by India’s erstwhile Maharajas.
In terms of actual dress, the women sported collarless bandh gala jackets and trousers in the beginning. Later in the show, models strutted down the runway in short dresses, gowns, and saris paired with capes and jackets. The men wore bandhgalas (suits) with shawls, sherwanis (long coats), and Nehru jackets. Each outfit presented a sultry, intriguingly mysterious edge in keeping with the hunting bird and prey theme. The color palette also paralleled this concept with neutral beiges, greens, and blacks. However, the striking instances of red or blue added an additional element of awe. Even though the clothes displayed a high dose of glamour, the fits and structures were very body conscious instead of voluminous or overly frilly.
The Christian Louboutin and Sabyasachi show was nothing short of extraordinary, and the duo proved to be the perfect match! Stay tuned for more PurseBop updates and follow ups.
