$5.6M of Counterfeit Luxury Items Headed for US and EU Seized in Hong Kong

Could there be a shortage of fake luxury bags and watches in the US this summer and fall? In this instance, the big bust wasn’t by the US Customs and Border Patrol, instead occurring long before the items landed stateside.

According to reporting in scmp.com, Hong Kong customs officials recently nabbed $5.6 million (HK$44 million) worth of counterfeit luxury goods (if genuine) within Hong Kong. Found at a border crossing and river trade terminal, the shipped items were ultimately intended for the US and the EU markets.

The Hong Kong customs authorities, with support from mainland China and Macau customs, discovered about 25 cases containing 67,000 counterfeit items during the last two weeks of July, including purported Hermès and Chanel handbags, Louis Vuitton, Hermès, and Gucci shoes, Patek Phillipe and Rolex watches.

Under Hong Kong law, importing and exporting goods with forged trademarks is a serious offense.
