Fashion Tidbits From the US Open Tennis

If you can’t take the heat, stay away from the US Open Tennis tournament in NYC. Temperature aside (and it feels like 95 degrees at 9pm), Serena Williams and Rafa Nadal take the court tonight. Even hotter is the crowd. The Hadid sisters are model fans this evening. The legendary Billie Jean King is, of course, in the house.

Besides tennis and climate, you need to match (get it?) your ensemble to the restrictions of the stadium. Clearly those in charge don’t love the latest fashion trends. Forget those giant bags – none bigger than 12”x12x”16” allowed. The only large sacs in here are the shopping totes from Polo Ralph Lauren filled with tennis togs.

No backpacks allowed here either even though they’re all the rage. In other words, leave those Louis Vuitton Palm Springs minis home.

Not to worry, Louis Vuitton was well represented at the tourney – many different bag styles and fabrications. Also in attendance was an array of Chanel, Valentino, Goyard, Saint Laurent and Prada. Hermès was repped by the Evelyne – Birkins and Kellys must have stayed home. Too hot, perhaps.

What really caught my eye though was the utterly amazing (i don’t have enough street cred to say “dope”) jacket sported by Serena. Jacket is such a misnomer anyway; it was a boss biker jacket/blazer taking athletic wear to a new level. I couldn’t help checking it out online during match play – it turns out to be a $900 Nike jacket designed by Virgil Abloh ( the new Louis Vuitton men’s designer) for Serena Williams. Take a look.

All of this had me thinking: what bag would you bring to the US Open or any other sporting event? Let us know.
