In the United States, 23 is well-known as Michael Jordan’s retired Chicago Bulls number. Well, Hermès now has given 23 a new reference point as, on September 13, 2024, Hermès inaugurated its 23rd leather production facility in France, with more planned for the next couple of years.
The latest new workshop is in Riom and represents the second site in its Auvergne hub. Hermès is repurposing a wing of the historic Manufacture des Tabacs de Riom, a former factory that has been a listed historic site since 2004. The 250 employees were trained at the École Hermès des savoir-faire that Hermès built in 2022.
Over recent years, increasing production capacity has been part of the Hermès mandate. Since 2010, Hermès established twelve new leather production workshops in France.
Of course, the big question for Hermès clients and fans is whether Birkin and Kelly bags and other leather goods will become easier to access. Thus far, most would say, that hasn’t happened as Hermès maintains tight control over supply, which seems never high enough to meet demand.
