Proving once again that what is old is new, is Gucci’s latest “it” bag – the Horsebit Chain bag. Recently seen on Korean singer Im Jin Ah, stylist Oumayma Elboumeshouli, influencers, Aimee Song and Tamara Kalinic, and Mytheresa’s Tiffany Hsu, among others, it is making huge waves in the fashion world. Of course, as suggested above, it’s not actually new. Rather it is a re-released and reinterpreted version of Tom Ford’s Gucci design.

Over the years, celebrities have been seen with the Horsebit Chain Bag. For starters, Rachel in tv show Friends carried the design during the 2003 season. Kate Middleton (now the Princess of Wales) held hers in 2012. Kendall Jenner and Rihanna also have carried the style.

During the transition from Alessandro Michele to Sabato De Sarno, Gucci’s design team decided to reintroduce this beloved bag. The Gucci Horsebit Chain bag, reimagined in the Fall-Winter 2023 collection, retains the same shape and silhouette as the previous version, but it features different colors and materials, with the exception of the GG canvas version.
Its long silhouette features both a chain strap and a leather strap, adorned with the maxi horse bit buckle—an iconic Gucci symbol since the 1950s. This buckle, inspired by the aesthetics of English horse racing was created during the time when Guccio Gucci worked at The Savoy in London. The classic horse bit became a staple in the brand’s identity.

Indeed, the original 1955 Horsebit bag is an archival Gucci bag. Timeless, functional, and chic it pays homage to Gucci’s heritage. In light of that, it’s no surprise that Gucci has returned this style to its handbag lineup.

For this season, the Horsebit Chain Bag is available in various color combinations and leather options. From quilted leathers to canvas and exotic fabrications, all with palladium hardware, the design includes both detachable leather and chain straps and a magnetic snap closure. Inside, there is a card slot and pocket.

All in all, the design and details make this a modern and contemporary choice, ideal for brunch, fancy dinners, and events.

The small size measures 10.6 x 4.5 x 2”, with the leather version priced at $3,490. The medium size measures 15 x 6 x 6.3”, with the leather version priced at $3,890, the canvas version at $2,890, and the crocodile leather version at $31,000.
