Limited edition Hermès bags generally come in a special orange box lined with a dark blue interior. These bags are offered for a certain period of time and then are retired. Generally it appears that these special bags are offered to VIP clients with a long established relationship with the brand and who have demonstrated their utmost loyalty.
However, as with all things Hermès, there are always exceptions. It is possible to be offered a limited edition bag from your SA in your home boutique or possibly in Paris despite the amount of time you have been shopping with the brand. The key is a good connection with your SA, a demonstrated love of the brand, and pure luck and timing.
