Are Mini Kellys A Passing Trend That Are Being Replaced By Larger Bags?

Dear PurseBop:

It seems like larger bags at Hermès are being offered more frequently lately. Is the Mini Kelly being phased out only to be replaced by larger bags like the Birkin 30 and Kelly 28?

Dear Mini Kelly Lover:

At Hermès the mini Kelly has been one of the most requested bags over the past several years. There is no question that it is beloved and coveted by many. As a result it is extremely difficult to be offered a mini Kelly. Production is believed to be low while demand is at its highest level.

We are seeing a trend at Hermès where the larger sized Birkin and Kelly bags are being offered more often in Paris and at home boutiques. Even the size 25 quota bags are not being offered as often.

I quote our trending article here:
Will Your Next Hermès Quota Bag Be Big?

Are big bags coming back into vogue because fashionistas demand them or because brands want us to want them. Put another way, is this supposed shift being imposed by Hermès or as a response to demand? It’s not entirely clear.

A Hermès shift to larger bags arguably represents a return to the original models that brought acclaim and demand. Jane Birkin’s original Birkin bag, designed by Jean-Louis Dumas, was 35 cm and was first released in 1984. It is considered the classic size Birkin.

Although we do not believe that mini Kellys will stop being produced or offered, it is getting more difficult to secure one at the boutiques. If a mini Kelly is on your wishlist, be prepared to be extra patient and enjoy your shopping experience in the interim. It will be worth the wait when you are offered your wishlist bag.
