Dear PurseBop:
Do you think the demand for Birkins, Kellys and non-quota bags has decreased recently?
Dear Demand for Quota Bags:
The demand for Birkins and Kellys will likely never decrease. However, there is a shift in desire when considering the long time collector versus the new aspirational client.
Demand for a quota bag remains high at the Hermès boutiques worldwide. Hermès began 2026 with a 3.8-10.3% price increase in the U.S. The more popular items and bags saw a high increase. After two price increases in 2025 (one in January and a second one due to tariffs in May 2025) demand is as strong as ever.
On the resale market the average resale premium for a Birkin or Kelly has softened particularly for larger sizes and less desirable colors. However, for the smaller sizes such as the mini Kelly, Birkin 25 and Kelly 25 prices are steady. The Kelly Pochette price continues to rise on the resale market and is selling for 2-3 times the boutique price in the U.S.
Demand remains high for the serious collector and ultra-high net worth buyer. Hermès has raised prices significantly on exotic bags and special collector pieces. Non-quota bags are experiencing significant price increases as well.
The new aspirational buyers may have cooled just slightly but the demand is high for all Hermès quota and non-quota bags.
The overall market is maturing, not weakening. There is less irrational buying. The highly coveted bags will continue to be extremely desired and difficult to acquire. Even in a cooling luxury market, the most iconic bags are still highly desirable and stand apart from its competitors.
