Dear Pursebop:

I would like to carry my luxury handbags to work but am worried it is either inappropriate or will cause my co-workers to judge me? What is your advice?

Dear Luxury Bag in the Workplace:

The balance between personal style and workplace perception is delicate, especially when luxury items are involved. Many factors affect what is appropriate. With respect to handbags, totes, and briefcases, the common thread is the less obvious the logo the better.

The factors to consider:

  • Office environment or culture (i.e. law firm, finance, fashion, creative, tech office)
  • Seniority of your position
  • Dress code of the office
  • Bag Style and Tone
  • Practicality
  • Perception and Comfort

Office environment or culture:

In a conservative or traditional work environment (law firm, bank, finance, etc.) understated luxury works best. Bags without overt logos but crafted in fine leathers convey polish without drawing attention. Hermès Kelly retourne or sellier (not a mini kelly), Lanvin, Moynat, or Delvaux are some good choices.

In creative, fashion, or technology workplaces, there may be more acceptance or opportunity to use a luxury bag that is a statement piece or conversation starter. Be sure to know the office environment and what is appropriate.

Seniority of Position:

The higher your seniority the easier it is to set the tone of the office. If you do not hold a senior position observe what others carry to work and act accordingly.

Dress code of the office:

Be aware of the way others dress at the office. Is the look more polished and professional or creative and without defined rules. This will help you choose the appropriate accessories each day

Bag Style and Tone:

A neutral, structured bag will always be more professional, refined, and safe. It is usually best to avoid logos on a bag unless it is subtle. Avoid trendy, sparkly, or logo heavy for daily use. Consider rotating your bags especially when meeting with clients. Unless you are a senior executive in a creative field, it is best to follow a more professional and understated choice for a bag.

Practicality:

A functional luxury bag that holds your daily essentials (keys, phone, glasses, laptop or ipad) is acceptable. Be sure it is not too delicate for your commute or office environment.

Perception and Comfort:

If you are worried about your colleagues’ opinions, keep your accessories minimal, your luxury brand understated, and your confidence high. If you act naturally, others will follow.

You bought the bags to use and enjoy them, including while you are at work. So carry them in a professional setting as long as they do not distract from your position. The right bag can subtly reinforce your authority and taste.
