Dear PurseBop:
I love Hermès and Chanel handbags and am slowly building a carefully curated collection. However, social media focuses primarily on the resale value of every purchase. How do I create a beautiful curated collection that I love while remaining mindful of the “investment” value.
Dear Buy What You Love,
A handbag collection is meant to bring joy, accessorize a fabulous outfit, and be used for decades. The term “investment value” has been overstated in the media. It is true that many Hermès Birkins and Kellys retain much of their value over time depending on condition, color, size, leather, hardware, etc. But that does not mean that you should build your collection based on the potential resale price of the bag in the future.
A handbag is an enduring and thoughtful purchase which enhances your style for years, holds meaning, and is useful for many occasions. That is different from assuming it will outperform the price you paid if and when you decide to rehome it.
Consider the cost per wear of your newest purchase. A bag you reach for often and carry over 100 times in three years will feel far more worthwhile than a rare bag that stays in its box because you are worried about using it and devaluing it for resale in the unknown future. It is far more significant to consider your wardrobe, climate, commuting habits, travel, daily lifestyle, and how much joy the bag gives you while using it than the potential future value.
Hermès and Chanel bags have historically been among the more resilient luxury handbag brands for resale purposes. But performance differs by model and shifts with market conditions. The most reliable return is enjoying the bag you love and using it with care. Do not build your purchase decision around a future sale that may never occur. These handbags are built to last for decades and generations. Your future offspring will cherish your purchases in the future. That is always the best resale value. However, if you decide to rehome your bags, be realistic, use a trusted reseller, and know there will always be another handbag to covet.
