Is It Safe To Keep Twillies On Our Hermès Bag Handles All The Time?

Dear PurseBop!

This community has been essential and loved for a long time by me – thank you to everyone who participates!

Each time I am offered a new bag, I always buy at least one set of twillies (not just for beauty and style!) to ensure my lotions, etc. do not come into contact with the handles of my new Birkin (or Kelly!). I keep my bags in tip top condition when not in use – always filled with whatever they came with inside, in their dust bags, tucked away on their pillows in their boxes. But recently, I have begun to wonder if keeping my twillies on my bags infinitum may be bad for the bags? Should I be worried about discoloration, color transfer, etc.? I want the best for my beauties and I appreciate any advice you can offer!

Dear Twilly Top Handle User:

You are wise to care for and protect your valuable investments by storing them properly and covering the top handles with twillies. Covering the handles with twillies had color, flair, and interest to your quota bags but also serve to protect the handles from wear, lotions or other things that may come in contact with them.

It is a good idea to take the twillies off your bags and let the handles breathe. Also, depending how tightly the twilly is wrapped around the handle it is possible that it could cause indentations or other impressions in the leather when left on for an extended period of time. So it is a good practice to remove your twilly and change it up so there is no risk of damaging the leather beneath.

Similarly, if you use bag inserts to keep the inside of your bag clean and organized, it is a good idea to remove the insert before storing your bag to avoid any crease or dents or impressions on the leather from the edges of the insert. We have seen impressions from certain inserts when used in the softer leather handbags. It is less likely to occur in the more structured bags in the Sellier style made out of Epsom leather. But removing the inserts before storage is the best practice.
