Should I Choose a Mini Kelly, Birkin 25, or Kelly 25 For My First Hermès Quota Bag?

Dear PurseBop:

I prefer smaller bags as I do not tend to carry a lot of things in my bag. I would love a mini Kelly but am not sure if it is the best choice for my first bag. What do you think I should choose for my first Hermès quota bag? A mini Kelly, a Birkin 25, or a Kelly 25?

Dear Tough Choice:

Your first Hermès quota bag is a very special opportunity to obtain a coveted bag that will last a lifetime and carry with it many fond memories of your journey. It is wise to consider the best size and style for your lifestyle, aesthetic, and tastes.

Although a mini Kelly is the cutest all around bag that transitions very easily from day to nighttime use, it is not always the most practical. In our opinion, the best time to wish for a mini Kelly is after you have acquired and experienced a Birkin and/or Kelly.

Since you do not carry many things in your bag on a daily basis we do believe the size 25 would be an excellent choice for your first bag. Whether you ultimately decide on a Birkin 25 or Kelly 25, rest assured that you cannot make a mistake with either one.

A Birkin 25 is beloved by most Hermès collectors for its ease of use, spacious interior, togo leather, and iconic aesthetic. A neutral color such as black, gold, gray, or white tone will transition well from day to night and be a forever bag in your collection.

A Kelly 25, either Retourne or Sellier style, has the added bonus of a shoulder strap and an ample top handle. The Kelly is loved by most for its ladylike aesthetic, its ample space inside, and the hands free option of the shoulder strap.

If your style is more relaxed you may prefer the Retourne style, usually in Togo leather. It is easy to use, holds many everyday items, is not as recognizable as the Birkin, and can be used during the day or into the evening.

If you tend to dress up for work or social events often and the Sellier style suits your taste, the Kelly 25 is a lifelong companion that only gets better with time. Although it is quite structured, it will maintain its shape despite being used often.

If you have never tried on a Birkin or Kelly, we offer some suggestions on where to experience wearing a Birkin and/or Kelly:

  • Ask your SA if your boutique has sample bags for clients to experience different styles and sizes before choosing;
  • Visit a reseller or vintage shop in your city and try on the different Hermès bags on display or available for sale;
  • Ask your friends and relatives if they have a Birkin or Kelly you can try on for size and style;
  • Read our articles linked below comparing the sizes of Birkins and Kellys available to help you decide what size and style is best for you.

Good luck preparing your wishlist. Be sure to share photos of your first quota bag with us.
