Dear PurseBop: My Hermès SA recently hinted that I may be “close” to a quota bag offer, but I am unsure what that really means. Is this a genuine sign, or simply boutique diplomacy? How should I respond?
Dear Reading Between the Lines:
Welcome to one of the most mysterious stages of the Hermès journey: decoding boutique language. When a Sales Associate says you may be “close,” it can mean several things — and unfortunately, none come with a guarantee. At Hermès, words are often intentionally soft. “Close” may signal that your profile is being considered, that inventory may be expected soon, that management approval is pending, or simply that your SA wants to encourage you to stay engaged without making promises they cannot control. In other words: it is usually a positive sign, but not yet a promise.
The good news is that SAs typically do not drop hints casually. If they chose to say it, there is often some truth behind it. They may be telling you that your consistency, relationship, and wishlist alignment are being noticed. That said, Hermès operates on shifting inventory, client priority, and managerial discretion. A bag that feels imminent can still take weeks or months.
So how should you respond? With warmth, clarity, and composure. Thank your SA, express genuine excitement, and gently reaffirm your preferences. A simple response such as: “That is wonderful to hear — I really appreciate you keeping me in mind. I’m still hoping for a Birkin 25 in a neutral color with gold hardware, but I trust your guidance.” This reminds them of your wishlist while showing patience and confidence.
What you should not do is immediately ask, “How close?” or begin texting weekly for updates. Nothing cools momentum faster than visible pressure. Hermès rewards clients who appear discerning, steady, and enjoyable to work with.
Most importantly, continue behaving exactly as you did before the hint: visit thoughtfully, purchase only what you genuinely love, and maintain an easy rapport. If the comment was sincere, patience now is often what turns “close” into “congratulations.”
Sometimes in Hermès, the final stretch is the quietest part of the journey.
