Dear PurseBop:

Is it best to take the plastic off the hardware immediately or can you keep the plastic on the hardware to protect it from getting scratched?

Dear Plastic on Hardware:

The decision to remove the protective stickers from the hardware of your luxury Hermès handbag is a matter of personal preference. Here are a few considerations to help you decide when to remove the stickers:

It is highly recommended by Hermes’ SA’s to take the plastic off all hardware immediately or within a very short amount of time after receiving your new bag. It is known that the hardware may tarnish if you leave the plastic on too long, particularly in humid weather.

If your hardware should tarnish, the Hermes spa may be able to repair or replace the hardware but at a cost.

Some people prefer the aesthetic of the bag without stickers, finding it cleaner and more polished. These people take the plastic off their hardware as soon as they unbox their bag. They believe that keeping the stickers on your hardware is akin to sitting on your grandmother’s couch covered in plastic. If this aligns with your preference, you can remove the stickers when you first unbox the bag.

Others leave the hardware on as long as possible to keep the bag feeling new and to avoid scratches. They will take the stickers off when they start to peel on their own. This practice is risky particularly in humid climates. Gold and Rose Gold hardware has discolored or tarnished when the stickers are not removed soon after purchase. Also, the glue from the stickers may leave a residue that may be challenging to remove.

If you need help taking the plastic off your hardware, the SA’s in the boutique are always willing to take the plastic off for you. It can be difficult, but it is best for the hardware.
