5 Watches Needed to Complete a Perfect Collection

Written by Sara, guest author.

About five years ago, upon receiving my first significant career recognition, I thought well, isn’t this the best time to finally get me that Rolex? These were the good old days, when you could simply walk into the store, find the SA that you jive with, and walk out (if not for a small wait time) with the watch of your dreams.

Today it is not so easy anymore. Even the entry level Oyster Perpetual Rolex has its own waitlist to rival the GMTs.

It got me thinking that there are so many amazing watches from a variety of brands, why not curate your timepiece collection. With my basic knowledge of horology (thanks to all those cool watch enthusiasts on YouTube) and may I say flair for curating just about any type of collection, here is my view on it.

Sara’s collection

The Dress Watch

Simple, understated and classic. These are words I associate with a dress watch. Sleek lines and a clean form make for a good dress watch. Jaeger-Le Coultre offers  the perfect dress watch in the form of the Reverso.

From its simple white watch face and clear numerals to the blue markers, it’s the perfect watch for that event you’ve been longing to attend or that date you and your husband have been planning since the kids are with the grandparents. Being able to literally reverse the watch face and protect it from scratches while doing chores is an added bonus for this mom of three.

Other dress watch options include the Longines Dolcevita, the iconic Cartier Tank or Panthere, Hermès H or Cape Cod.

The Diver

A workhorse of a watch that has found its way into the luxury realm via Rolex and Omega, the diver is a hefty watch that says the wearer means Business (with a capital B). Being a Rolex fangirl, my personal pick is the Rolex Submariner Date (126610LV), lovingly known as the Starbucks. At 41mm this would be a bit of a stretch for my small wrist, but the tapered lugs allow for a hugged look on even a small wrist.

The Rolex Glidelock extension system allows for even miniscule changes to the bracelet size without having to visit a shop. It conveniently allows you to compensate between the winter and summer seasons when sometimes you just need that extra space on your wrist.

Other options would be the Tudor Black Bay 58 Blue and the Omega Seamaster Diver 300M – The latter I highly recommend for its choices of bracelets or straps, the option for the dial and bezels and the open case back.

The Daily

The non-obtrusive, the if-i-see-this-watch-it’s-Mrs-Rambler’s watch. That’s the daily watch. It’s the watch that is almost synonymous to your personality. And for those who know me well, the Rolex Oyster Perpetual 36mm Candy Pink is a perfect match!

The simple Oyster bracelet doesn’t scream Rolex, the size is a good fit on my 15cm wrist, and the pink dial is just the right amount of pop for my Gemini personality. Other options would be the Oris Divers Sixty-Five Cotton Candy (comes also in Blue and Green dials), The Nomos Campus Collection in Pink (also in blue and white dials), the Portofino Automatic 34, and the pièce de résistance, the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Self-winding 37mm in Steel.

The Chronograph

This is still missing in my collection. I currently enjoy the Swatch Moonswatch collection to keep me happy. For now.

My dream chronograph is the Rolex GMT-Master II (126710BLNR) in Black/Blue bezel. Others dream of the Rolex Daytona with the steel version the most popular. The GMT watch gives you the ability to see your current time and also any other city you wish by turning the bezel and aligning to the right hour on the dial. Part of their professional line, this is a watch you buy to celebrate a milestone -like my Submariner marked 10 years in my job. It can be worn with casual outfits and even dressier events.

Other superb Chronograph options include the Omega Speedmaster. There are literally so many to choose from here from the Professional line to their new models, there’s one for any personality. Alternatively consider the Tudor Black Bay Chronograph, Tissot Heritage 1948, and the IWC Portugieser Chronograph.

The Wildcard

Here we enter the realm of dreams, the watch that doesn’t need to make sense, it just needs to make your heart sing. For me, it’s the Rolex (this had to be obvious by now) Rainbow Cosmograph Daytona in Everose.

But let’s bring it down a bit, this can be a watch with a dial color that is not white or black, a case size that you would not normally consider, or a playful watch face.

There you have it – a five watch collection that satisfies every palette. It really doesn’t even have to be five watches, based on your lifestyle, personality and need, this can help gauge and curate the best watch collection for you. Having this in mind will help you curate a collection that you will enjoy through the years and maybe even pass on some of these watches to your kids someday.

Happy watch hunting!
