The Hermès and Chanel Bags Defining Heritage Auctions Spring Luxury Accessories Auction

When it comes to luxury handbags, no two enthusiasts are searching for the same thing. Some gravitate toward bold, statement-making pieces, while others focus on rarity, craftsmanship, or timeless design. What makes a bag unforgettable is how it resonates with the person holding it — whether that’s a classic Hermès Birkin, a Chanel Classic Flap, or a lesser-known design.

Heritage Auctions’ Spring Luxury Accessories Signature Auction brings all of these options together in one curated collection. From oversized statement bags and exotic skins to limited editions and everyday icons, the offering reflects the full breadth of handbag desirability. It’s an opportunity for collectors to uncover pieces that align with their style and vision. With bidding now open and the auction closing on April 23, 2026, the time to claim your next dream bag is now.

Come preview and shop the bags at the Heritage Auctions New York location at 445 Park Avenue New York, NY 10022 from April 16-17 from 10am-5pm and April 18 from 11am-4pm.

Statement Makers: The Return of Big Bags

Oversized bags are having a moment, and frankly, the bigger and slouchier, the better. Thanks in part to Matthieu Blazy’s vision at Chanel, relaxed, travel-friendly shapes have taken center stage — from runway shows to street style snaps. This season, it’s all about Birkins and Kellys in the 40cm size that can practically carry your weekend wardrobe, and Chanel XXL Classic Flaps that make a statement without even trying.

Exotics at the Top

Exotic skins continue to sit at the pinnacle of handbag collecting. Within Hermès, the elusive Himalaya Birkin or Kelly is often seen as the ultimate expression of luxury, though exotics extend far beyond a single icon. From the fine grain of lizard to the distinctive pattern of ostrich and the depth of alligator, each skin brings its own character to a familiar silhouette. Chanel offers a different kind of rarity — with exotic skins no longer part of its collections since 2018, auctions like this one present a rare chance to acquire them.

Rarely Seen: Discontinued & Reissued Icons

Some handbag icons never lose their allure, whether preserved in the archives or revived years later. Hermès and Chanel both draw from decades of design history, offering pieces that continue to turn heads long after their original debut. At Heritage Auctions, vintage treasures like a 1970 Hermès Alcazar or the 1984 Rio Clutch share the spotlight with more recent statement pieces, from the 2010 Hermès Toolbox to Chanel’s 2012 Boy Brick Lego Minaudière. Even Jean-Paul Gaultier’s iconic 2004 Shoulder Birkin, reimagined for Hermès’ Spring-Summer 2024 lineup, demonstrates how a bold design can find new life two decades later.

Jewelry in Handbag Form

Sometimes, a handbag can outshine even the most striking piece of jewelry. Hermès and Chanel have long transformed bags into wearable treasures, where metalwork, studs, and precious leathers become statement adornments in their own right. Take Hermès’ Limited Edition Argent Sterling Silver Kellymorphose Sac Bijou Chaine by Pierre Hardy – a sculptural masterpiece that blurs the line between bag and jewelry. Chanel follows a similar ethos with its iconic minaudières: from the delicate birdcage design of Spring–Summer 2025 to the Hammered Gold Bullion Bar Minaudière of Spring 2006, each piece is a sparkling hybrid of accessory and adornment. For a subtler edge, Hermès’ Clouté-studded Mini Kelly in Box Calfskin delivers rock ’n’ roll glamour, while the Argent Chèvre Chamkilight Mini Kelly radiates on its own.

Everyday Essentials

Not every bag needs to steal the spotlight. Sometimes, the perfect handbag is the one you can count on day in and day out. Whether it’s a Hermès Birkin or Kelly in the practical yet stylish 25 cm, or a crossbody classic like the Jypsière or Chanel Coco Handle, these designs combine function with effortless flair. Available in timeless neutrals – from Hermès’ iconic Gold and Étoupe to classic black, they transition seamlessly from morning meetings to everyday errands.
