No Birkin or Kelly on the Hermès Spring 2020 Runway

If you’re looking for a Birkin or Kelly, you won’t find it on the Hermès Spring 2020 runway. A bit ironic as the collection drew inspiration from Hermès’ history as a leather and saddlery goods maker.

Specifically, the ensembles included lots of leather (some backed by organza . . . cool!). Pieces even resembled craftspersons’ aprons. Colors tended towards neutrals—you know: black, camel, brown, wine, green with purses to match. Truthfully, neither the fashion nor the bags were exactly springlike, and certainly not colorful. But, perhaps, that was the point.

The Cinhetic

So what about the shape of bags? Without the trifecta of Birkins, Kellys, or Constances, the featured and updated new classic was the Cinhetic: a leather, structured, boxy model with distinct vertical H hardware. Naturally, it’s not exactly like prior models of the Cinhetic. The bag has a top edge (similar to the Toolbox) that adds to the framework. Some of the bags include a thick strap and handle and are shown slung cross-body over the back.

An Updated Drag Bag

Two other bags followed an east-west line, both hand-held with long straps as well. One was structured and resembled Hermes’ old-school Drag Bag, originally designed by Robert Dumas in the 1960s, albeit with different hardware. Today’s version included a lock not previously seen.

A Slouchy, Horizontal Bag

Conversely, the other horizontal bag is a bit slouchy. It’s a sling bag style with zippers. Shown in leather and leather with fabric, the bag includes a top handle and long strap.

A Shoulder Bag…of Scarves?

For even less structure, Hermes showed a very large shoulder bag resembling scarves. Indeed, the bag could have been constructed from actual scarves.

An (Impractical) Chaine D’Ancre Tote

Lastly, a smallish leather tote in the chaine d’ancre pattern caught our eye. Shown in both dark camel/brown and black, it was airy, if not entirely practical.

Any of these catch your eye? Are there other bags you’d rather see? And let’s hear from the Cinhetic fans.
