Louis Vuitton Fall 2020 Bags Encompass the Past, Present and Future

For the Louis Vuitton Fall 2020 runway, past, present and future fused a new vision. A chorus of singers dressed in an array of historical clothing from Edwardian garb to top hats and tails echoed throughout the Louvre in Paris. Louis Vuitton’s creative director Nicolas Ghesquière focused this collection around the key concept of historical eras intersecting and fusing with the present. According to Vogue Runway, the designer stated: “I wanted to imagine what could happen if the past could look at us.” The bags were no exception.

The mix of past and futuristic silhouettes paired interestingly with innovative bag designs that presented a fresh look for the brand while still evocative of Vuitton’s signature majestic style.

The New Monogram

First, we (as in the “royal we” or actually Louis Vuitton) give you Vuitton’s new monogram! The new design consists of a khaki-colored fabric embellished with the house’s trademark monogram motifs in black and white and is paired with deep burgundy leather. The varying sizes of the motifs create an almost hypnotizing effect. Some read ‘since 1854’, thus paying homage to the house’s rich and esteemed heritage.

The collection featured flat messenger style bags in both the new and old monogram styles, seemingly to prove that both monogram variations suited the functionality of the design.

One of our favorites was a mini bag akin to Vuitton’s classic Noé. This petite bucket style bag featured the collection’s new monogram with burgundy leather corners and thin straps. The bag’s square shape and this new fabrication combine to chic effect.

Louis Vuitton Classics

Some LV classics made an appearance … but with a twist! One model strutted down the runway at the Louvre clutching  what looked like a much loved and beloved Keepall Bandouliere in the classic monogram. The twist, however, is the addition of a thick strap in the new monogram design, a perfect way to enlist the latest style into LV royal status and fuse together the house’s past and (possibly) future classics.

Ghesquière approached the bags in this latest collection with the motto – ‘the smaller the bag, the chunkier the strap’ and we must say we’re fans of this outlook. There is something alluring about the juxtaposition of a thick strap on a slight bag.

Bags Fit for Royalty

Furthermore, other styles featured chunky straps and were adorned with what could pass for the fashion house’s royal crest. This certainly made the choir member dressed as Elizabeth I look more appropriately placed! This design came in a myriad of colors including deep rouge and gold. We’d expect nothing less from royalty! The regal embellishment may be Louis Vuitton’s attempt at making its shoulder bag style a stand out star. What do we mean? In other words, could this be the next “it” bag, much like Fendi’s iconic Baguette bag. Only time will tell.

Top-Handle Mania

Sophistication and elegance oozed on the runway as models sported structured top-handle bags. If they look familiar, perhaps it’s because this new tote style somewhat resembles the infamous Hermès Birkin. Just look at the side straps reminiscent of Birkin sangles and the hanging cloche. Admittedly, the Louis Vuitton shape is slightly more east-west rectangular, but the similarities are apparent. Color options included white and black, khaki-colored and black, black and brown as well as all-over brown.

Conversely, Ghesquière created another structured design with a rounded motif. The collection includes a semi-circle shaped bowling bag in two tone tan complete with an LV inscription and chain.

Trunks, Trunks, Trunks!

What would a Louis Vuitton show be without the appearance of trunks. In true LV form, models walked the runway clasping trunks big and small either by a top-handle or chunky strap.

Although the collection’s clothes featured pompous frills and styles reminiscent of dinner jackets from centuries past, bag designs include some from the brand’s not so distant past. The Dauphine bag, for example, which was particularly prominent in Spring/Summer 2020,  re-appeared for Fall 2020. And, not surprisingly, Vuitton continued with its popular mix of the classic monogram with leather.
