Basket Bags Match Chanel’s Haute Couture Fall/Winter 23/24

Forget carrying your essentials, the only bags displayed during Chanel’s Haute Couture collection for Fall/Winter 23/24 were woven baskets . . . filled with flowers. Pretty accessories to be sure, but not exactly what you expect to see in a premier luxury show.

To be fair, Haute Couture collections typically are not bag-centric. These groupings are about the fabrications of its most elite ensembles. Indeed, Chanel’s Haute Couture collections rarely include handbags at all. So the inclusion of these purses (if you consider them that) is a step in the right direction for those of us who focus on the bags.

Models strolled along the right bank of the Seine River in Paris, the Eiffel Tower visible in the background, displaying dark and floral designs. The collection is for autumn and winter, after all.

Describing designer Virginie Viard’s collection as “a portrait of a delicate yet bold femininity” Chanel goes on to say:

The collection, presented on the riverbanks of the Seine, is adorned with embroidered fruits and flowers motifs reminiscent of the still-lives dear to pictural arts. Silhouettes play with masculine codes, mixing together rigour and asymmetry, a self-confident and discreet figure.

Those “still lifes” apparently are in the form of bouquets embedded in wicker (or rattan or straw) baskets. Or planters, if you want to be cynical. The five shown vary in size and shape. Although the flora may be the point of the handheld totes, we expect fashionistas will be looking to add similar baskets to their bag collections. After all, whether for Spring and Summer, or now Fall and Winter, basket bags are a popular shape and style.

In an interesting juxtaposition, Chanel paired an evening gown -perhaps velvet – with one of these floral baskets. Maybe this is will be the next trend at weddings – replacing handheld bouquets with filled baskets?

In real life though, few of us will be walking the Quai (or any avenue) with a flower basket. Which raises the question – who are these for?

What are your thoughts on seeing formal ensembles with nature-inspired handbags? Or do you prefer your planters firmly situated on the patio? Let us know whether one of these baskets be on your wish list. That is, if they are for sale at all.
