Are you still buying Chanel in Europe?

In light of the global harmony of Chanel prices, would you use your spending money towards Chanel or would you, like Elizabeth explore other luxury brands?

We have talked extensively about these price changes over the last several weeks, but now it’s time to talk about the impact these changes have on your vacation dollars for luxury spending…

Is Chanel going to still be at the top of your shopping list?

With other luxury bags costing considerably less in Europe because of the devaluation of the Euro, and because Chanel increased it’s prices to compensate for this fact, it seems here is a shift of interest from Chanel to other brands. At least in the short term.

A close look at these calculations ?

I think is still worth it to buy all the European brands over there. For example I went to Spain in May, I bought a classic Chanel medium bag, the price was 4260 ( taxes included) minus 550 of tax return = 3710 euros. In dollars this translates to $4155. Here in the US is 4900 + 343 of tax= 5243. The math is very simple 1088 dollars of difference is well WORTH IT. They have tax included and the tax return.
  • Wow! That is amazing deal – and what a great tax return, i never knew Spain still had that! Congrats on your purchase though xx

fabulous LOVE, Congrats on your new classic bag! That is amazing! With the devaluation of the Euro, it still is very lucrative!

Just picked up a Jumbo Easy flap at Champs Élysées for €3400 plus €442 tax refund. Bought earrings at rue cambon as they were sold out of the easy flap. Gotta get the all white bag!

I love buying my Chanel pieces in the Rue Cambon store. Whenever I want another Chanel piece I’ll always make it a little more special by taking the Thalys for a day in Paris and buying at Rue Cambon. Love the Parisian atmosphere. Hereby my latest purchase, so in love with it! :-)

I am currently in Europe, and I just bought two bags. One of them is a Le Boy in new medium size, which costed me €4,150 minus 13% of VAT refund = €539. The total I paid for the bag at the end was €3,610, which is approximately $4,000.
The same bag in USA costs $5,200 + 8% taxes (in California) total of 5,500.
I still saved $1,500 at the end, after the price increase in Europe. And YES, totally worth it!

You’ll find me buying Chanel wherever and whenever I feel the need to!However, I do think that the experience of buying Chanel in Paris still is that bit more special! Who doesn’t want a white Chanel shopping bag with ‘rue cambon’ on it ? ;)

I’d probably go for shopping in US. Main reasoning being is that I’m content with my chanel collection now, and there’s no need going that out of the way or making more an impulse buy in Paris when there’s no huge advantage.

For me, having the experience of shopping in paris is special in itself. If I had plans to go to europe, I’d definitely hold off and buy it there.

I was in Paris a few months ago and got a jumbo flap and wallet. Luckily, this was before the big Chanel April price increase in Europe. I am going back in October, and would like purchase something beautiful. If Chanel, I was thinking a Boy WOC.

I’m also open to Hermes, as there is a bigger savings (compared to US). Trying to spend no more than $2,500 (US dollars) this trip. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!! ?

For me it’s more about access to a greater variety of items than the price. Where I live, the entire stock of espadrilles sells out in two days and the SAs are loathe to put them aside for you. When I went overseas, they brought out six different pairs all in my size. I paid more for them but at least I could get them!

Let me just say that the last time I was in Paris, this happened.. Haha
Well this was before the price increases but I’d still be buying Chanel in Paris rather than the US just because it’s a whole different experience.

I do agree fully that Chanel classic pieces’ prices in Paris are no longer extremely attractive as before. But yet the feel of owning a One n only white Chanel box is simply out of this world for a Chanel lover. So succumbing to the Rue Cambon Coco Chanel fairy tale is definitely a dream come true!❤

Every time i travel, i save some money for shopping since it is much more cheaper in Europe (i live in Istanbul) and with tax refund, some special discounts for foreigners, it makes more sense :) and unfortunately, they send very limited colors, models etc to Istanbul boutique.. spain is my fav shopping heaven :) i will be in spain again this summer so i hope to find couple of things in Chanel :) and this is Chanel, whatever the price is, we will still keep buying .. i am sorry ladies but this is the truth. we LOVE chanel :D

Well, for me, when comparing Europe with Brazil, prices are still a lot cheaper in Europe, even with the increase… so I´d definetely consider buying a Chanel there (if I could, of course hahaha)… on the other hand, if I lived in the USA, I´d probably only buy in EU if I came across some magnificent Boy that I probably wouldn´t find anywhere in the US…if not, I´d focus on other brands that are cheaper in Europe and leave the Boy to be bought in the USA ;)

well, a classic flap in Macau is still a little more expensive than the price in europe after apr 8. I think we can still consider getting chanel in europe. The price in Macau for a classic flap currently is MOP$39,100 which is around Euro 4468!

I was in Paris at the time of the price increase. Before April 8, the lines were ridiculous and I didn’t want to spend my whole trip waiting. I got to Chanel on April 9, and while the crowds were much less, the selection wasn’t as wonderful as I’d hoped, since everything had been picked over. I bought items at several other designers and while I’m normally a Chanel fan, it interested me the least! Honestly I was a little annoyed that US pricing stayed the same, since we’ve been paying much more compared to Europe for years!

I will going to Paris in July and plan on doing some shopping but I am not sure that Chanel will be among the chosen, i find it discouraging what they did about their prices, but still the tax refund keeps the price for me sort of interesting… On the other hand, and to be absolutely honest, after I accept the first glass of champagne at 31 Rue Cambon i stop thinking about the prices whatsoever :)

I was lucky enough to score a Chanel flap in Paris just a couple weeks before the price increase but even with the increased prices a couple hundred dollars plus a VAT refund still adds up to significant savings so I would definitely still consider buying Chanel on my next trip! The funny thing is I had no idea of the price of the bag until I bought it, I knew it was somewhat cheaper but had no idea just how much less, if I had known ahead of time I would probably have planned on buying more. I mainly wanted to buy in Paris for sentimental reasons and for the tax refund, I didn’t realize the retail price would be such a difference from the U.S. On my next trip though, it would all depend on what I’m wanting most at the moment.

  • hotsauce
do you know what percentage you get back on the VAT refund?
  • levernisnoir
I think it was 13 if I remember correctly, or 11?
