Dear PurseBop:

How do I keep my luxury bags from Hermès and Chanel safe at home, while traveling, and when walking on the street in big cities?

Dear Keep My Bags Safe:

In light of the increase in home burglaries, robberies of luxury bags and jewelry on the streets, and the overall safety of our luxury items, we offer the following suggestions.

Safeguarding Luxury Bags and Jewelry at Home:

  • Consider purchasing a high quality, heavy, and large fire proof safe for your home or a discrete vault door to safeguard your luxury bags and jewelry.
  • Be sure it is bolted securely to the floor or concrete.
  • Hide the safe inside a closet outside the master bedroom or behind a false door or wall.
  • Speak with your insurance broker about adding a separate jewelry ryder and/or personal valuables policy to your existing homeowner’s policy or take out a new insurance policy covering all your luxury items.
  • Place an Air Tag or other tracking device in every luxury handbag and box containing a luxury piece of jewelry, watch, or other item.
  • Update your home security system with an alarm, cameras all around the outside of your home and inside where necessary, install glass breaking sensors at all glass doors and large windows, consider using interior motion detector sensors when you are not home or traveling.
  • Never post on social media in real time when you are not home or traveling.
  • Consider removing all luxury handbags and jewelry from the master bedroom. Store these in another unlikely area or bedroom in the home.

Safeguarding Luxury Bags and Jewelry While Traveling:

  • NEVER pack luxury handbags, jewelry, or other valuables in checked luggage.
  • Place Air Tags or other tracking devices in all luggage, handbags, and jewelry boxes.
  • Place all valuables in your carryon luggage and/or discrete personal tote bag and keep these items close to you and within eyesight at all times.
  • Be wary of placing valuables in the overhead bin on an airplane or train or bus as there have been reports of items stolen from the overhead bins while passengers are sleeping or distracted.
  • Be aware of your surroundings at all times in big cities when traveling and where there are a lot of tourists in the area. Pickpocket thieves prey on tourists who are distracted or in large groups.
  • If traveling on subways or public transportation in large cities keep your personal items very close to you and beware of pickpocket thieves. Do not be distracted by talking to others or absorbed in your cell phone. This makes you an easy target.

Stay vigilant and alert at all times both at home and while traveling.
