It’s not a Birkin or Kelly, but Hermès’ Evelyne bag just might be the first stop on the Hermès journey. Introduced in 1978, this bag was designed with practicality in mind, even as it honors the Maison’s equestrian heritage. Nearly fifty years later, its minimalist saddlebag silhouette, iconic perforation, and relaxed design still define understated elegance.

Often considered the gateway bag for many collectors, the Evelyne holds a loyal following thanks to its versatility, lower price point, and casual appeal. With a range of leather options, seasonal colors, and now five different sizes, including a newly added 23 cm, the Evelyne remains one of the most wearable and recognizable bags in the Hermès lineup.

The Evolution of the Evelyne
The Evelyne originated as part of Hermès’ equestrian line, designed to carry grooming tools. Its most recognizable feature—the perforated ‘H’ arranged in an oval—echoes the shape of a hoofprint. This design detail allowed air to circulate and dry equipment inside the bag. At the time, it was worn with the ‘H’ against the body, keeping the branding discreet and the function intact. Today, that same detail is often worn outward, turning practicality into a subtle statement.

Since its debut, the Evelyne has undergone subtle refinements across several generations:
Evelyne I
The original design featured the iconic perforated ‘H’ but lacked an exterior pocket. It came with a non-adjustable leather shoulder strap.

Evelyne II
Building on the original, the second generation introduced a back exterior pocket for added functionality—while still retaining the fixed strap.

Evelyne III
The most widely available today, the Evelyne III features both an exterior pocket and an adjustable canvas strap, offering greater versatility and comfort for cross-body as well as shoulder wear. Currently available in Hermès boutiques and online, this generation comes in sizes ranging from 29 to 40 cm.

Evelyne Amazone
Exclusive to the 16 cm size, the Evelyne Amazone offers the same practical silhouette in downsized dimensions. It features the same design elements as the Evelyne III range—including the perforated ‘H’ exterior rear pocket, and adjustable strap—all reimagined in a compact crossbody format.

Evelyne Sellier
Introduced in Fall 2016, the Sellier offers a sleeker, more structured take on the classic Evelyne. Made from rigid Hunter leather, it replaces the iconic perforated ‘H’ with an embossed, “H diamant” emblem. The closing tab features straighter lines and a tighter hold, while the seams are less pronounced. Unlike other current versions, the Sellier does not have an exterior pocket. Produced in 16, 29, and 33 sizes, it offers an alternative look within the classic Evelyne lineup.

Evelyne Neo
Introduced in the Spring-Summer 2023 collection, the Evelyne Neo offers a fresh, modern take on the classic silhouette. Crafted from durable Officier canvas with contrasting Swift leather trim and detailing, it highlights the signature perforated ‘H’ with the addition of textured English embroidery. Departing from the traditional canvas strap, the Neo comes with an all-leather strap designed for short shoulder carry. The Evelyne Neo is available in both 16 and 29 sizes.

New Evelyne Sellier
Not to be confused with the 2016 Evelyne Sellier, Hermés teases us with a New Sellier style that is already trickling into boutiques. This updated version in Epsom leather is offered exclusively in the 16 cm size and features a non-adjustable, detachable all-leather strap. Like the earlier Evelyne Sellier, it omits the back pocket, resulting in a more structured, minimalist silhouette.

Signature Leathers of the Evelyne
The Hermès Evelyne is crafted in a variety of leathers, with Clemence and Epsom being the most common fabrications due to durability and classic appeal. The adjustable shoulder strap introduced with the Evelyne II is typically made from a durable canvas with leather accents, while the newer Evelyne Sellier 16 cm and Evelyne Neo feature an all-leather strap for a more polished look.

Here are the main leather options available on the Evelyne:
Clemence
Clemence leather is a textured bull-calf leather, known for its soft, prominent grain created through a special tumbling process. It offers a supple feel with a semi-matte finish and is durable yet tends to develop a relaxed slouch over time, lending a relaxed elegance to the Evelyne.

Maurice
Maurice leather, introduced by Hermès in 2017, is a type of bull-calf leather known for its smaller, more defined grain and firmer texture. Maurice holds its shape better than the softer Clemence leather. It offers a more structured yet still supple feel.

Epsom
Epsom leather is a lightweight, embossed calfskin distinguished by its cross-hatched grain pattern created through heat-pressing. This gives it a rigid, scratch-resistant surface with excellent color retention and a subtle sheen.

Barenia
Most commonly seen on vintage Evelyne models, Barenia is a smooth, natural vegetable-tanned leather with a rich heritage in Hermès’ equestrian roots. It develops a rich patina with use, enhancing its character over time. Known for its signature aroma and luxurious feel, Barenia is paired with Hermès’ hallmark contrasting saddle stitch

Barenia Faubourg
Introduced in 2017, Barenia Faubourg is a modern evolution of the original. It shares the same tanning process and aromatic qualities, but with a finer, pressed grain that improves durability. Like Barenia, Barenia Faubourg is also defined by its contrasting saddle stitch detail.

Vache Hunter
Vache Hunter leather is a firm, structured hide with a smooth surface and subtle shine. While refined, it naturally develops a unique patina as scratches and marks accumulate with wear. This leather is notably used in the Evelyne Sellier.

Veau Doblis
While rare, the Evelyne can occasionally be found in Veau Doblis, a classic Hermès suede known for its soft, velvety texture and distinctive napped finish.

Beyond Leather
Hermès employs the Evelyne as a canvas to explore the use of alternative materials. Versions crafted from Feutre wool combine a thick, soft felted wool body with smooth Swift leather trim, offering a distinctive bi-material look that feels both cozy and refined.

The Neo Evelyne offers a fresh, contemporary twist on the classic silhouette, crafted from Officier canvas—a tightly woven cotton with a refined texture—and accented with supple Swift leather trim.

Evelyne 23
When the Amazone feels too small and the 29 too large, the new 23 size hits the Goldilocks spot. While you can’t fit a bulky book, you can easily pack more SLGs and daily essentials without sacrificing the Evelyne’s streamlined silhouette. Versatile and stylish, this size will effortlessly transition from day to night.

Evelyne 29
Often considered the classic everyday size, the 29 can be just right with enough space for daily essentials plus a few extras. It can comfortably accommodate a Kindle or small tablet, as well as a book, making it ideal for work, errands, or casual outings.

Evelyne 33
For those who need a bit more capacity, the 33 comfortably fits a 14-inch laptop alongside your daily essentials. Spacious without overwhelming your frame, it’s suited for casual days out or light errands.

Evelyne 40
The largest in the lineup, the 40 functions as a roomy tote-like bag, primed for work, travel, or carrying everything you need on the go.

Every Shade, Every Strap
One of the Evelyne’s standout features is its playful use of color—across both leather and strap design. Classic shades like Noir, Gold, and Étoupe are always in rotation, while seasonal releases introduce bold tones and limited-edition hues.

Equally eye-catching are the Evelyne’s canvas straps, which often feature contrasting colors, vibrant stripes, or even spotted patterns. These bring an extra dose of personality to the bag’s utilitarian roots. For even more customization, Hermès also offers a range of separate straps, allowing you to mix, match, and style your Evelyne to suit your mood.

Styling the Hermès Evelyne
Effortlessly chic and endlessly versatile, the Evelyne is a closet chameleon. Its clean lines and classic crossbody silhouette make it a go-to for everyday ease. Notably, all sizes work beautifully as shoulder bags or crossbody styles, depending on your preferred strap length.

All current Evelyne styles feature a detachable strap, which means you’re not limited to the original canvas or leather version, depending on the model. Many opt to swap it out with other Hermès options — from the structured Kelly Pocket belt to the playful Sangle Cordage strap for a sporty twist. Others tie silk Twillys to create DIY handles or add chunky chain straps for a hint of edge. The Farandole necklace, a house icon, has also made its way into the Evelyne styling world, repurposed as a luxe crossbody or shoulder strap.

While the Evelyne is traditionally worn crossbody or on the shoulder, fashion-forward wearers have been known to style the 16 cm size as a belt bag — wrapping the strap around the waist for a hands-free, street-style-approved look.
