What do you get when one of the world’s most coveted handbags gets a face, arms, and legs? Hermès’ answer is the Kelly Doll: a collectible character that doesn’t take itself too seriously. The original, officially named Quelle Idole, was followed by the pixel-inspired Kelly Doll Picto.
Both the Kelly Doll and the Picto are more than just bags, they’re characters in a play on the iconic Kelly handbag. So, what sets these two little icons apart?

Meet the Original: Hermès Kelly Doll
Designed by Jean-Louis Dumas, the former chairman and CEO of Hermès, the original Kelly Doll debuted in 2000. Its official name, Quelle Idole, is a French expression meaning “What an idol!” To English-speakers, there’s a playful twist in the pronunciation: Quelle sounds a bit like “Kelly,” and Idole echoes “doll,” a fitting wordplay for a handbag that would become affectionately known among collectors as the Kelly Doll, thanks to its face, arms, and tiny feet.
Produced in limited runs between 2000 and 2005, the design was periodically re-released, often in connection with new boutique openings. Today, it continues to be produced in extremely limited quantities, with occasional releases keeping collectors on the lookout for this elusive design. Once presented in Hermès’ limited-edition Blue Box packaging, the Kelly Doll is now offered in the Maison’s standard orange box.

A Character Full of Detail
What gives the Kelly Doll its character is in the details. The Touret closure doubles as a nose, while hardware button eyes bring the face to life. Its distinctive smile and eyebrows are cleverly cut into the leather, revealing a contrasting shade beneath. Leather sangles serve as arms, as tiny feet peek out beneath the base.
Its limbs can even be gently repositioned, thanks to flexible leather and internal hardware that let you pose it. Whether you want your Kelly Doll waving, striking a cheeky pose, or simply showing off its smile, these movable details give the design extra charm.

Beneath its playful features, the Kelly Doll keeps the familiar trapezoidal silhouette of its larger Kelly siblings, scaled down to 5.5 x 6 x 2.5 inches (H x W x D). Compared to the Mini Kelly II, which measures approximately 5 x 7.5 x 2.2 inches, the Kelly Doll is slightly taller, narrower, and deeper.
The Kelly Doll’s Retourné construction, with the leather seams tucked inside rather than stitched outward, create a more casaul look. Rounded edges suit its toy-like look while keeping the shape of the classic Kelly. Its curved top handle mirrors that of its Kelly siblings, but does not have a detachable shoulder strap.

Colors, Leathers, and Special Editions
From bold brights to rich, classic shades, the Kelly Doll has appeared in a range of color combinations over the years. The original versions often featured a main shade, such as Rouge H, Orange H, Bleu Saphir, Vert Olive, Noisette, or Rouge Vif, accented with contrasting details. The design has since expanded to include multicolor interpretations, with combinations such as Rouge H and Bleu Hydra adding further variety to the Doll’s distinctive look.
The leather has evolved, too. The earliest Kelly Dolls were crafted in Gulliver leather, a predecessor to Swift. Today, Swift is the material most commonly used for the design. Swift’s smooth finish shows off the Kelly Doll’s intricate details, while its excellent color retention keeps Hermès’ vibrant shades rich and saturated.

Kelly Dolls can be exotic too, crafted in matte or shiny alligator, with Swift leather accents. Although the design is not available for special order, exceptional versions have been created through Hermès’ bespoke Horizon line.
The Kelly Doll Picto: A Pixelated Makeover
Two decades later, for Spring-Summer 2022, Hermès introduced the Quelle Idole Picto, most commonly known as the Kelly Doll Picto. Part of Hermès’ Blue Box collection, the design also connects to the Maison’s Arts & Crafts creations, which highlight the playful side of its leatherwork. With its graphics inspired by pixel art and digital aesthetics. Its contemporary look set it apart from the original Kelly Doll while keeping the same playful spirit. The Picto design was discontinued in 2025.

A Graphic Twist on the Original
Like the original Kelly Doll, the Picto has a face and moveable limbs. The Kelly Touret closure doubles as a nose; and the facial features and limbs are reimagined through geometric shapes and contrasting blocks of color. Think Kelly Doll for Minecraft.
The Picto measures 4.5 x 6.5 x 3 inches (H x W x D), making it shorter, narrower, and slightly deeper than the Mini Kelly II. Constructed in the Sellier style, the Picto is structured, with its seams stitched outward. This gives the bag its sharp edges and defined shape – a natural match for its pixel-inspired details.

But this little character has a few extra tricks up its sleeve. A miniature, removable backpack is one of the Kelly Doll Picto’s standout features, secured with a snap closure and sized for small essentials such as cards. Also included with the Picto is a detachable shoulder strap, allowing the bag to be worn on the shoulder or crossbody, as well as hand-held.

Epsom Leather and Color Blocking
Typically crafted in Epsom leather, the Kelly Doll Picto gets the structure that Sellier construction offers and the sharp, geometric angles its design requires.
Color brings the Picto to life, combining four shades in each bag to create the pixelated look. One pairing brings together Vert Vertigo, Gold, Bleu Zanzibar, and Gris Misty, while another features Mauve Sylvestre, Nata, Chai, and Lime.
