Everything You Need to Know About the Hermès Jypsiere Bag

Instantly recognizable through Hermès’ signature hardware — plaque, pontets, and touret fastening, the Jypsiere feels familiar at first glance. Yet despite these shared design codes, it exists outside the Birkin family, with a name, personality, and spirit all its own. Designed by Jean-Paul Gaultier in Fall/Winter 2008, this messenger-style bag balances elegance with playful, on-the-go practicality, evolving in size over the years while keeping the silhouette that first captured attention in the iconic JPG era.

Design That Moves With You

Defined by its messenger-style silhouette and refined Sellier construction, the Jypsiere draws on the traditional hunting bag while echoing the elegance of the Birkin.

This hybrid aesthetic is most evident in its hardware, where the sangles loop through the body of the bag and secure at the front with the touret fastening. With a semi-structured shape and gently curved edges, the Jypsiere rests comfortably against the body. Its integrated shoulder strap is fully adjustable, allowing for a relaxed shoulder carry or a hands-free crossbody style. Inside, an open compartment includes slip pockets for organization while the gusseted sides provide structure.

Originally produced in four sizes, Hermès has since streamlined the Jypsiere lineup. Today, only two sizes remain, each with distinct features that preserve the bag’s  practical versatility and bohemian charm, making it a perfect companion for life on the move.

Jypsiere Mini Bag

Introduced in 2023, the Mini Jypsiere was Hermès’ answer to the demand for a compact, everyday carry-all. Petite yet practical, the Jypsiere Mini retains the bag’s signature gusseted silhouette while standing out with its distinctive strap design. Mini styles feature a fixed shoulder strap, often in plain Wooly canvas, though patterned and leather versions also exist. While the strap isn’t removable, it is fully adjustable, offering a range of 25–41.5 inches for a comfortable fit over the shoulder or crossbody.

Jypsiere 28 Bag

Significantly larger yet equally practical, the Jypsiere 28 retains the gusseted silhouette while introducing a leather shoulder strap that attaches to the bag’s D-rings, complete with a padded section for comfort. The strap is adjustable (37–43 inches) and detachable, allowing you to swap in an alternative strap or a chain for a fresh look. This larger version features extra pockets for organization, including a zipped front pocket, a phone compartment, and a slip pocket, keeping essentials neatly in place.

Signature Leathers of the Jypsiere

The Jypsiere is offered in a selection of leathers, each chosen to complement its semi-structured silhouette. The most common options include Evercolor, Evergrain, Taurillon Clemence, and Swift, offering a mix of durability, texture, and Hermès’ signature color vibrancy.

Here are the key features of the leathers used in the Jypsiere collection:

Evercolor

Evercolor is a smooth, finely grained calfskin with a soft, satiny finish, combining a luxurious look with  durability. Its supple texture complements the Jypsiere’s structured silhouette while remaining resilient enough for daily wear. With vibrant color absorption, Evercolor enhances shades from Hermès neutrals to bold brights.

Evergrain

Known as the sister of Evercalf, Evergrain features a distinctive crackled motif that gives the leather a soft, tactile feel. Lightweight and supple, it is slightly more prone to scratches than other embossed Hermès leathers, though minor marks can be buffed out at home. More significant scuffs can be addressed at the Hermès Spa, making it a practical yet characterful choice for everyday wear.

Taurillon Clemence

Also called Clemence, this durable leather derives from bull-calf hide and is defined by its pebbled-grain texture and semi-matte finish. Softer and more supple than Togo, Clemence has slightly larger, flatter grains and offers a relaxed, tactile feel that suits the Jypsiere’s casual, on-the-go aesthetic.

Swift

Swift leather is a smooth, fine-grained calfskin with a subtle sheen that enhances Hermès’ signature color vibrancy. Soft and supple to the touch, it feels luxurious while remaining durable enough for daily wear. Most commonly reserved for the Mini Jypsiere, Swift gives the bag an elegant, refined finish.

H Canvas & Swift

For a casual yet polished option, the Jypsiere is also available in H Canvas paired with Swift leather trim. H Canvas features a distinctive woven design, created by interlacing threads to form its signature textured pattern. Lightweight and durable, smooth Swift leather accents on the straps, flap, and trim provide a refined contrast.

Niloticus Crocodile

The Jypsiere occasionally is crafted in exotic leathers, most notably Niloticus crocodile. Available in both matte and shiny finishes, Niloticus is best known for its use in Hermès’ most coveted bags, including the Himalaya Birkin and Kelly – adding an extra layer of exclusivity to the everyday icon that is the Jypsiere.

Jypsiere Mini

Compact yet cleverly designed, the Mini Jypsiere fits daily essentials with ease. Inside, you’ll find room for a smartphone (including larger models), a cardholder, keys, lipstick, and hand sanitizer. Sunglasses may fit snugly, however, it’s best to avoid overstuffing the bag as it may damage the front flap. Ideal for hands-free days, travel, or light everyday carry.

Both versions feature fully adjustable straps, letting you find the ideal drop for hands-free convenience or a relaxed, casual look wherever your day takes you.The compact Mini sits comfortably even over thick coats, while the larger 28 works equally well for men and women, though slightly bulkier when worn crossbody.
