Most luxury handbags arrive ready to wear – Loro Piana has other ideas. The Italian house’s latest accessory invites clients to take a more hands-on approach, offering a product that sits somewhere between a handbag accessory and a styling tool. The result? A concept that requires a little creativity — and several hundred dollars.

Bag lovers and fashion houses alike have long championed the art of DIY accessorizing. Hermès, in particular, has spent decades demonstrating the versatility of its iconic silk scarves, bandanas, and twillys. Over the years, these fabric pieces have been styled as halterneck tops, headscarves, belts, and even knotted into open-top totes. Collectors have taken the concept even further, weaving Twillys into braided bag straps, connecting two scarves together to create flowy summer tops, and even adorning sandals for a touch of personalization.
Now, Loro Piana is putting its own spin on the idea. Rather than introducing a scarf-inspired handbag, such as Hermès’ Balusoie, the house is offering a standalone Foulard Handle. That is, a handle to help transform your favorite silk into a handbag.
Crafted from woven calfskin, the Foulard Handle measures 10.2 inches across and is finished with Sun Gold hardware and logo-engraved metal rings. Those rings are designed to secure the corners of a silk scarf, transforming it into a softly draped shoulder bag with what Loro Piana describes as a “delicate, summery feel.” The house even provides step-by-step instructions, ensuring clients can master the art of handbag assembly without resorting to YouTube tutorials.

The appeal lies in the endless customization. Pair it with a vibrant print and the result feels playful and vacation-ready; switch to a muted neutral and it takes on an understated look. In theory, a single Loro Piana Foulard Handle could create an endless rotation of handbags from an existing scarf collection. Of course, there is one small catch: the woven calfskin Foulard Handle retails for $600, and the plain calfskin version comes in at $375 – before you’ve selected the scarf itself. Currently offered in Burnt Tan and Dusty Sunset, both paired with Sun Gold hardware, the Foulard Handle feels like a niche proposition even by luxury standards.

The Loro Piana’s Foulard Handle is not for me. Since the “bag” would not have any support or shape, when contents are placed in the scarf bag it would look lumpy, bumpy and unattractive. Also, good chance the interior would get dirty and you’d never be able to wear it as a scarf.
