Editor’s Update: September 12, 2023

Hooray . . . At least as of today, prices for Chanel’s Medium Classic Flap in the United States have not changed. It is still listed at $10,200 on the brand’s website.

Are Chanel prices going up? That’s the burning question on everyone’s mind.

There is isolated information about Chanel price increases that have already taken effect in certain countries. This is a developing story and here’s what we know so far. Increases have gone into effect in Australia, China, Japan, and Thailand.

Thus far, price hikes on Chanel’s Classic Flap are around 7%.

As of this writing, prices neither in the United States or Europe have risen.

We can’t say we weren’t warned. Recall that when Chanel shared its year end 2022 financial results in or about May 2023 (two months after instituting a price increase on many bags), its Chief Financial Officer Philippe Blondiaux did not rule out another hike.

The recent price hike in Australia took the retail cost up 7.6%. In case you’re curious, if we extrapolate a 7.6% price increase in U.S. pricing for the medium Classic Flap, that would add another $775 to the $10,200 price tag. In other words, that would put the bag virtually at $11k. Of course, we don’t know if or when that will happen.

Whether the recent Australian increases are instructive may depend upon how prices compare between countries. Chanel seeks global harmonization in pricing; that is, buyers should pay the same no matter where they purchase (local taxes, VAT, and duties aside).

So then let’s ask ourselves this: Is this just global harmonization or a global price increase?

The pre-increase Australian price of the Medium Classic Flap was AUD $15,710, approximately $10,177.34 USD.

The Medium Classic Flap in the US is currently $10,200, relatively the same as the pre-increase Australian price.

Therefore, this price change seems likely to be an increase rather than harmonization.
