Eye spy with my little eye… something Fendi, and no—it’s not the Baguette. This is the Spy Bag, a 2000s-era hit, now resurfacing for a new generation of bag devotees.

Debuting in Fendi’s Spring/Summer 2005 collection, the Spy quickly became a cult classic thanks to Silvia Venturini Fendi, the same designer behind another Fendi icon, the Peekaboo. Her knack for playful elegance shines through in the Spy’s design: a soft, pillow-like shape hides a secret compartment beneath its flap, reminiscent of a vintage coin purse, and secured by a discreet button. A true IYKYK design, the Fendi Spy keeps its exterior understated, while the flap-top opens to reveal the signature Fendi Zucca print interior.

The Spy Bag, like other early-2000s favorites such as the Chloé Paddington or Balenciaga City tote, quietly slipped out of the spotlight for a time, tucked away in closets and archives. However, with the resurgence of Y2K fashion, fans have been digging out vintage Spy Bags and seeking pre-loved pieces, putting these iconic bags back in focus.
Nearly 20 years later, Fendi revisited the Spy for its Fall 2025 runway, updating the classic pillow-like silhouette with both new materials and subtle design shifts. The tubular woven-leather handles of the original gave way to wider, slightly twisted handles that flow seamlessly from the body of the bag, creating a sleeker, more modern finish. Another change lies in the closure: the vintage Spy featured a woven tab with hardware hanging from the concealed coin purse, while the reissue opts for a knotted, tone-on-tone leather strap, void of hardware. Alongside these updates, the new lineup showcases fresh fabrications – including silky satin, buttery leather, luxurious shearling, and even inlaid hagfish (similar to eel) and mink fur.

The reissued Spy Bag also offers greater versatility. Both the small (12.6 × 7 × 5 in) and large (18.9 × 8.7 × 7.9 in) sizes now feature an adjustable, detachable strap for crossbody wear. Meanwhile, the large size still delivers the charm of the original Spy, bridging the gap between tote and shoulder bag. A new mini Spy Bag is also on the horizon, already available to pre-order directly from Fendi, offering an even more compact take on the iconic design.
