Celebrities Battle it Out – the Mini vs. the Midi Bag

With care-free summer days now firmly behind us, are mini- and micro-sized bags about to go back in the closet? And if so, who’s coming out? Some say it’s the midi. Not big, not small, the midi bag is essentially a medium-sized bag. It’s somewhere in between the teeny-tiny bags that have divided the fashion community and a carry-all jumbo tote that could likely house hundreds of its tiny counterparts.

Even celebrities face the new autumnal season fresh with a can-do attitude and back-to-business focus. As a practical matter, they, like we, often need to carry more than just a lipstick. PurseBop has tallied the choices of many an A- and B-lister – and we see a battle raging between the two sizes. With strong competitors on each side, which size will reign this fall?

For those of you who are die-hard mini bag fans you’ll be happy to know British TV and radio presenter Maya Jama has got your back. The 25 year old was spotted pinching (yes, pinching) an eensy-weensy Jacquemus Chiquito while jumping into a sports car last month. The Jacquemus is one of the smallest bags out there and has caused quite a stir amongst the luxury handbag community. Described as a “handcrafted micro bag” on the house’s website, the Le Chiquito technically is too small to be a mini – but it’s still a bag of choice for little bag handlers.

Hailey Baldwin was recently seen sporting the midi bag trend carrying a Balenciaga Hourglass Top Handle Bag while out in Los Angeles. Opting for a glossy finish, the Bieb’s wife looks ready for fall with her bag of choice that can hold more than a phone but is still far from a jumbo tote.

Since the launch of the Louis Vuitton BB Mini Luggage Bag earlier this year, it has proved popular with stars like teenage YouTuber Emma Chamberlain. Bets are that this little bag will be everywhere this fashion week. The bag, first seen at Nicolas Ghesquière’s fall/winter 2019 show for the house, is a shrunken version of Louis Vuitton’s iconic trunks. Experimenting with new trends while embracing heritage is certainly what Vuitton does best. Ghesquière’s monochrome take on the classic Damier canvas and colorful calf-leather details evokes a sense of ‘70s business chic.

Actress Lucy Hale has been flaunting her Chanel crossbody bag all over her Instagram as of late. The bag has been her trusted travel companion as she explores Europe and was seen everywhere from the streets of Florence in Italy to Disneyland Paris. The practicality of the hands-free Chanel design combined with the neutral tan and black tones suggests we could be seeing more of this gem as the actress chronicles her adventures this fall.

This famous family could never not make our list. It seems Kourtney Kardashian took pointers from younger sister Kim and opted for a black Hermès Mini Kelly while out and about in the City of Angels. Looking care-free, we guess the eldest sister managed to carry all she needed in her compact bag.

Louis Vuitton was spotted again this time on the arm of actress Chloe Grace Morëtz. The 22 year old movie star clutched the New Wave Chain Bag in the shade Malibu Green. The bag features a shoulder strap as well as a removable top handle for dual wearability.

Kate Upton completed her all white look at the Venice Film Festival this year with none other than the Gucci Sylvie Leather Mini Bag in the same hue. The model and actress opted to carry the bag with its top handle. The Sylvie’s structured shape is typical of the mini bag trend and its gold buckle detail oozes petite chicness.

Whether you love or loathe the mini bag trend there’s no denying its popularity is threatened by the growing number of midi bags that not only provide a breezy, care-free aesthetic but the space for all the essentials needed for you to rock this fall.
