Grab & Go: The Goyard Reference Guide

Sometimes, you just need a reliable bag to throw your life in when you’re running errands or traveling…and Goyard is the way to go. While some of Goyard’s bags such as the Saint Louis Tote have become more ubiquitous, overall, the brand has remained low profile compared to its industry peers. Nonetheless, Goyard is the travel expert and continues to make great quality bags that always peak our interest. PurseBop is here to help you navigate all the Goyard goods from classics to new favorites. In the reference guide below, learn a bit of Goyard history and see bag highlights from the collection!

BACKGROUND

History

Goyard is a French trunk maker that first started its roots in the House of Martin in 1792. The House of Martin specialized in box making, trunk making, and packing and was a favorite among the French aristocracy. Francois Goyard eventually became an apprentice at the House of Martin, and when the owners died in 1852, Goyard took over and totally revolutionized the business with new designs. Today, Goyard has reached such a prestigious position in the bag world by staying true to its roots and aesthetic. In general, Goyard does not create advertisements, participate in e-commerce, and has very little outside retailers to maintain exclusivity.

Monogram

The Goyard monogram look like a random geometric pattern, but it is actually symbolic. The print is repeated sets of three chevrons in a “Y” formation, which symbolizes three centuries of the Goyard household and their Compagnon de Rivière ancestors. The pattern was originally hand painted, but now it is achieved through layers of etching and engraving color.

The ICON

Goyard Saint Louis Tote

The Goyard Saint Louis is a winner because of its simplicity and lightness. It is a true “throw everything it in it” tote bag with almost no structure. While the bag’s material looks similar to leather, the Saint Louis is actually made from canvas, which is mixture of cotton, linen, and hemp. The biggest advantage of canvas is its ability to hold up to damage. The canvas is waterproof and can be cleaned easily, which even makes it a great, stylish beach bag. The bag features a detachable pochette for smaller items since the tote has no top closure and just features one big main compartment.

The Saint Louis comes in two different sizes PM and GM. The PM, the smaller of the two, may be more suited for everyday wear and the GM makes for a roomy travel bag. However, each size is versatile, so you can choose your preference based on your needs, stature, or desired look.

SIZES (height, width, depth)

Goyard Anjou Reversible

The Goyard Anjou is Goyard’s latest bag. Although it looks very similar to the Saint Louis, it is structured a little bit differently and is REVERSIBLE. One side is canvas and the other side is grained leather. The bag’s solid interior can be easily flipped to the exterior so that the monogram is just an inside accent. The bag also features a detachable pochette like the Saint Louis and a luggage tag can also be added.

As of now, the Anjou is only available at the Paris and New York flagship stores.

CROWD FAVORITES

Goyard Saigon

The Goyard Saigon Bag is a very vintage looking, structured bag that we can’t help but think resembles a hard bodied Hermes Kelly or Delvaux Brillant bag. The bag features a wooden top handle, wooden slats down the side, and a large center buckle. Overall, the bag’s silhouette lends it to more formal occasions and has a very ladylike presence.

Goyard Belvedere

The Belvedere is another popular bag from Goyard. It has a messenger bag look and is the perfect balance between a handbag and travel bag.
