Hermès Prices 2020: USA Versus Europe

Hermès St Tropez, France.

In the shadow of all the news on Chanel bag prices rising, it’s time to shine a light on our beloved Hermès Birkins. While not entirely devoid of change, thus far the increases have been nominal and only in Europe. As for the future… well, we shall see.

In January 2020, Hermès Birkin prices rose nominally in Europe. Typically Hermès enacts minor hikes discretely at the beginning of each new year. In February 2019, for example, Birkin prices rose approximately 3-5%. This year was no different, with one notable exception.

For Birkins in the 25 and 30 sizes, prices rose by about 3%. The Birkin 35, however, saw no change.

As of now, Birkin prices have not increased in the United States 2020. However, we must remember that stores closed in March and, for the most part, those that have reopened are only open for delivery and curb side. The last discreet U.S. price increase was February 2019. Contrast this to Chanel’s recent double digit price spikes:

Moreover, the “Birkin Premium”  vis-a-vis Chanel classics is at historic lows.

For Americans traveling to Paris – whenever they’re allowed and choose to – that means there’s still an advantage to purchasing abroad. In contrast to Chanel, there are considerable savings to buying a Birkin in France. The chart below illustrates just how much you can save by purchasing that Birkin from the mothership country.

And it’s impressive. For a Birkin 25 and Birkin 30 in togo leather, Americans could save 24.6% and 22.4% respectively! Of course, the ultimate potential savings depend upon VAT refunds, currency exchanges, customs and duties when reentering the home country.

Prices 2020: Europe Versus USA

Despite Hermès’s January price adjustment, as you can see from the chart below, the differential between the U.S. and Europe prices stayed the same. For example, whereas in 2019 the savings to buy a Birkin 25 in Europe versus the U.S. was €2458, now it is €2428… a difference of only €30. For the Birkin 30, last year the difference was €2444 and now it is €2441… difference of only €3.  For a potential American buyer, the slight increase in the Birkin euro price is offset by the devaluation of the euro against the dollar. Since the start of 2019, the euro is down around 3% against USD, and it was down as much as 5% at the beginning of 2020.

We will keep a close eye on any further Hermès price increases over the year, although historically this seems unlikely. Ultimately, the current disparity is great news for American buyers abroad, whenever they finally get the opportunity to travel to Europe!
