Are Supersized Bags Here for Fall?

Are Maxis the new Minis? Of course, we’re talking about handbags (though there are plenty of longer dresses we love as well). After years of obsession with the tiniest of bags, bigger styles are hitting the streets with more frequency.

Perhaps folks are finally remembering the convenience of having one’s belongings easily accessible and by one’s side (or cross-body or on the back). There’s an ease – both literally and style wise – of tossing necessaries in a bag, rather than always paring down to absolute essentials. You’re busy, on the go, and ready for anything.

From oversized throw ‘n’ go work totes, to spacious beach bags, let’s take a look at some of the maxi marvels we’ve spotted.

We’ll start with the popularity of this summer’s YSL Icare tote. It’s the bag seen everywhere on everyone. And that includes the many celebs toting this tote. Simple in design, the large and in charge YSL logo is sure to make a statement. At the same time, its utility and versatility cemented it as this summer’s staple. No surprise then, that celebs worldwide have been spied rocking the Icare from the gym to work to casual days out.

Folded in at the sides for a sleek finish, or opened up for full effect, the Icare Maxi definitely makes a statement. What’s more is that fashionistas everywhere are already anticipating transitioning it into a fall bag and really, what more could we ask for? To go from spring-summer to fall-winter without a hitch, and all with an air of chicness? It’s no wonder the Icare has become so popular.

But it’s not just YSL’s hit that’s taking over. Chanel’s most recent creation, the 22, also reads large and in charge. Although this catchall style tote draws both accolades and criticism, no doubt it’s part of the current louche and casual look. In fact, Chanel has this  bag in its FW lineup, with both velvet and tweed versions set to join the 22 family.

The demand for vintage maxi size bags is rising too. Trend-setter Rihanna has been carrying Tom Ford-era Gucci maxi bags. And as we’ve written before, interest in vintage Chanel classic flaps in the maxi size continues to rise.

Whether this is just a summer trend, remains to be seen. But many of our favorite brands are coming out with stellar maxi styles that are keeping us on the edge of our seats. Love the Bottega Veneta Jodie? How about a supersized version? Kendall Jenner clearly favors hers in black. Even Miss Gigi Hadid is a fan of the maxi bag.

Let us know if you’re carrying your maxi into next season. Are you totally loving the trend or forever a minibag master?
