Small Bags Remain Big for Fall 2019 NYFW

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: mini bags are here to stay. (Read: Five Reasons the Hermes Mini Trend is Here to Stay). They carry just as much as you need without weighing you down. And they certainly are convenient to store as well. Even PurseBop herself got in on the fun-sized action with her mini Birkin. And one look at NYFW’s fall season runways reveals a whole new era to the big little phenomenon. From tiny cross-body and belt bags to structured, box and case shaped purses, the trend continues to reinvent itself with each new season.

While mini backpacks were a popular street fashion trend at Spring 2019’s Fashion Week, they’ve been supplanted. This seems to be the season of the mini, box bags. As awards season rolled out, we saw the bags start to hit the red carpet on the arms of celebrities like Nicole Kidman (Read: The Best Bags of the 2019 Awards Season). Made with hard materials, these little cubes and cases give your outfit a point (or four).

In addition to⎯and, in the case of Gabriela Hearst, alongside⎯the hard cased mini trend is the continuation of the belt bag and the mini crossbody. Belt bags and fanny packs were all the rage during the Spring 2019 NYFW, and it looks like the trend has yet to slow down. With interesting new shapes and interpretations, belt bags were a mini staple on the Fall runway. Likewise, crossbody bags and wallets were a popular hands-free option.

So, are you relieved to see the mini trend as strong as ever? NYFW certainly seems to predict a new wave of mini bag designs that are out of (and in the shape of) the box. What style are you most excited for? There’s definitely a lot of unique options to choose from. Or, perhaps, you’re waiting for big bags to eat up the size competition.
