Street Style Analysis: The Hottest Bag Trends of NYFW

New York Fashion Week has come to a close, and you know what that means. Well, it means two things. 1) London Fashion Week is just around the corner (we can’t wait!), and 2) it’s time to look back and assess the street style of the fashionistas who descended upon the streets of Manhattan to attend some of the most exclusive shows in the fashion world. Specifically, we’re looking at handbag street style.

We love evaluating the bags that accompany women attending fashion week since they give us a snapshot of the hottest trends right now. We can always track which new bags brands are releasing, and which ones appear ultra-popular on IG, but it’s not until all the fashionistas come together that we can really assess what’s hot and what’s not. This year, we’ve seen some expected new trends, as well as some traditional favorites. We’ve also noticed some surprising absences. (The Gucci Dionysus, for example, was rarely spotted, and the Marmot wasn’t as popular as it has been in recent months!) Take a look at some of the most stylish looks from fashion week below, alongside our take on the handbag trends of the moment.

Fanny Packs

Fanny packs have been “in” for a little while now, and it’s safe to say this trend is reaching its apex. They were everywhere during NYFW—in all their forms: leather, monogram canvas, nylon, crossbody, around the waist. Instead of dying down, the fanny pack trend is still exploding.

Colorful Tweed Chanel Classic Flaps

While we always expect to see Chanel Classic Flaps, there was a certain style of Classic Flap that was surprisingly common at NYFW: colorful tweed. It’s classic tailored-suit Chanel with a twist, and we’re all about it.

Classic LV Monogram Pieces

If you were worried about the LV monogram going out of style anytime soon, don’t. This NYFW proves that monogram canvas (and leather) is tried-and-tested, and won’t be considered passé anytime soon.

Dior Saddle Bags

You know those Saddle Bags you’ve been seeing all over IG? That has translated completely to the streets of Fashion Week. The revival of the Dior Classic was everywhere to be found this past week—and we have to say we’re fans ourselves. We love a little vintage revamp.

Classic Chanel Bags

No surprise here—but it’s always comforting to see our favorites elegantly draped over the shoulders of über-stylish, risk-taking fashionistas.

Mini Backpacks

While perhaps not as popular as they have been in the past year, mini backpacks still made a splash at NYFW—though it’s safe to say they’ve been at least temporarily dethroned by the reigning fanny packs.

Belt Bags

The twin of fanny packs, belt bags are also having their moment. Think fanny packs but slightly more structured, and with the dual function of bag + belt. These adorned many a fashionista’s waist.

Dior Lady Dior

This is a classic we were slightly surprised to spot so frequently. The Dior Lady Dior, one of the most traditional and lady-like bags on the market, was in fact very common at Fashion Week. We loved seeing the juxtaposition of the Lady Dior to less traditional outfits!

PVC Chanel

Another iteration of the Chanel Classic Flap kept popping up: this time, the colorful, translucent PVC bags. We adore how playful these beauties are, and we’re confident the “clear trend” is still having its moment.

LV New Wave

Remember that new Louis Vuitton Collection you were all highly divided on? Well, the LV New Wave bags are making quite the splash. Whether or not you like their bold, retro style, the bags clearly weren’t a flop and indeed had a visible presence on the streets.
