Travel Reminder: Don’t Put Your Birkin in Checked Luggage

Don’t say we didn’t tell you. Or warn you. Several times over. But a recent airline luggage mishap by YouTube celebrity Jeffree Star drives the point home (read: YouTuber Jeffree Star Loses Rare $60,000 Birkin).

On a recent air flight, Star checked luggage with his $60k exotic ultraviolet Birkin inside. Upon landing, the bag was nowhere to be found. Fortunately for him, his bag was located and returned three days later. A traveling companion’s luggage was not so lucky.

So, for those of you traveling this summer by commercial air (or any other method that separates you from your luggage), here’s your refresher:

KEEP YOUR VALUABLES WITH YOU. That means that expensive bags, jewelry and the like, must go in your carry-on pieces not in any bag you check. Obviously, and as learned by Star, locking your luggage is useless in the event your bag goes missing.

So, how do you travel with those designer bags? Naturally, one school of thought is to leave those prized purses home. But, what fun is that?  And that’s certainly against all of PurseBop’s beliefs. These delightful possessions are meant to be carried and enjoyed, at home and while traveling. Moreover, journeys often provide a wonderful opportunity for shopping excursions… and the acquisition of another (or more) handbags.

The answer lies in the planning. Carefully select your traveling companions…  we mean bags.

Make sure you have extra capacity for the trip home, whether that means a partially empty valise leaving home or bringing (or buying) an extra carry-on tote for the return trip. If your shopping endeavors are successful, you’ll need easy access to your purchases for VAT refunds, if applicable, and for customs declaration upon your return.

PurseBop’s tried and true bag-nesting is a lifesaver when you’re carrying multiples.
