The RESULTS: Bags You REALLY Prefer

by Morgan Robinson
Part I: If you had $3000, What Bag Would You Buy?

Time for a follow-up!

Recently we went on a virtual shopping spree together to compare bags we would or wouldn’t buy given a certain amount of money. Our little case study provided some surprising insight into what kind of bags we find worth the money, and overall, what bags simply appeal to us.

With each this or that bag pair, let’s take a look at the final “winner” of the round. The winner is calculated by how many votes a bag received in our polls. The results are not meant to reflect which bag is better or worse, but rather to help us understand bag preference. Bags don’t become cult favorites or “it” bags on the sole basis of looks. Many times, people may gravitate towards a bag because of its functional purposes or sheer innovativeness. Instead of judging which bag is better looking, we can take some time to analyze the legitimate reasons why many people may prefer one bag to the other.

The important thing to remember is that shopping decisions are highly personal. Many factors play into why we are quick to write off one bag but pledge total love to another. We all have very different styles, needs, and budget concerns. If your favorite bag didn’t win, just remember that there were still many other people on your team too!

Saint Laurent vs. Gucci

Speculation why the Gucci Soho Disco bag won:

  • Every fashion house makes their own version of the Camera Bag because it is an essential style. The Gucci Soho Disco Bag is a part of the Soho bag family with the signature “GG” lettering. The Gucci Camera bag may have had the slight edge because it is a part of this legacy.
  • As far as smaller, entry-level accessories, Saint Laurent is more known for their Wallet on Chain styles. The Camera Bag may be a less recognized bag in the Saint Laurent collection.
  • The logo of the Gucci Camera Bag is embroidered, which may make it easier to pair with more looks. While the big GG’s are by no means subtle, bags with specific hardware may seem less versatile to some.

Stella McCartney vs. Mansur Gavriel

Speculation why the Mansur Gavriel Bucket Bag took the win:

  • The Stella McCartney Falabella has a one of a kind shape that piques the interest of many. However, more people may favor the Bucket Bag because it is a timeless silhouette. Classic shapes are easier to incorporate into a collection.
  • Both Stella McCartney and Mansur Gavriel are companies that stick true to their concepts and missions of quality. However, Mansur Gavriel has truly hit the mark of success for their business model. As a company, they’ve fostered a lot of popularity in a short amount of time because they know how to produce styles that their consumers love. This is why the Bucket Bag can sell out from department stores in seconds!
  • The thick hardware chain on the Stella McCartney Falabella may be too bold or excessively decorative to those who prefer a more neutral, understated look.

Louis Vuitton vs. Goyard

Speculation why the Louis Vuitton Neverfull took the win:

  • You can’t go wrong with the Neverfull or the Saint Louis as go-to, “carry it all” tote bags. Both Louis Vuitton and Goyard are fashion houses with rich histories, and both are respected in the luggage and bag worlds. However, the LV Neverfull can pass as both a handbag and a tote bag. The Goyard Saint Louis is distinctly more casual and very tote-like, which may be too much of a limitation for some.
  • The Louis Vuitton Neverfull comes in many prints, colors, and seasonal styles. Goyard offers a broad range of colors and customization for the Saint Louis, however there aren’t many versions outside of their classic line.

Celine vs. Chanel

@mylifeincolors_

Speculation why the Chanel Mini took the win:

  • Even though the Chanel and the Celine are both great mini bags, the Celine Luggage tote is slightly more “trendy”, which may be a turn-off for some.
  • In terms bag investment and worth on the second-hand bag market, the Chanel Mini is slightly more valuable because it is a classic bag. Even with this mind, both the Chanel mini and Celine nano get a lot of credit for being truly loved bags.

Dior vs. Fendi

Speculation on why the Dior Lady Dior Bag took the win:

  • Both the Lady Dior and Peekaboo are tremendously popular bags, but the Lady Dior claimed “it” bag status long before the Peekaboo. Even after the initial spike in popularity, the Lady Dior has held rank as all-time favorite and classic. The Peekaboo may achieve this status as well but it needs to stay in the game much longer.
  • The quilted material and ‘Dior’ charm on the Lady Dior bag are signature accents that win over many people. Even though some people will appreciate the minimalist look of the Fendi Peekaboo, in plain leather versions it may not seem eye-catching enough.

Saint Laurent vs. Chloe

Speculation why the Saint Laurent Sac de Jour took the win:

  • Both the Drew Bag and the Sac de Jour are bags that quickly became crowd favorites. However, due to its traditional shape, many people may think the Sac de Jour will have more longevity in their collection as something other than a trendy bag.
  • The Sac de Jour has less hardware, which might make it easier to style with more looks. Not everyone is a fan of metal jewelry chains and this is one of the main features of the Drew Bag.
  • Both Chloe and Saint Laurent have revitalized the visions behind their bag collections. It goes without saying that we love what’s going on at Chloe right now. Yet, as of recent times, Saint Laurent has garnered more attention and appreciation in the public eye in comparison.

Chanel vs. Chanel

Speculation why the Chanel Classic took the win:

  • The word “Classic” has an instant pull. People want pieces in their collection that are timeless, versatile, and great investments. Even though the Boy Bag is part of Chanel’s iconic line and isn’t going anywhere, the Classic started its claim to fame before the Boy Bag.
  • The Chanel Classic Flap has a dressier and more feminine feel. Since Chanel bags have pretty steep price tags, people may feel inclined to pull them out for special occasions or more stylized looks. A Classic Flap may elevate a dressy outfit more than a Boy Bag.

Hermes vs. Hermes

@missypalette

Speculation why the Hermes Birkin took the win:

  • While the Birkin and the Kelly are both coveted H bags, the Birkin is slightly more popular in the public eye due to more media exposure.
  • The Birkin has the ease and functionality of a tote bag. Although you can fully secure your B with the flap, many people leave their Birkins open and throw items in and out. You cannot leave the Kelly open, which is a con.
  • Even though the Kelly is versatile and can match up to many styles, it does have a very ladylike charm. If this fits your personality and style, the K may be your first choice. However, the Birkin might have a broader appeal because it is more utilitarian and slightly more casual and sporty looking.

Above all, with this round we saw that picking a B or a K is nearly impossible and is more about how each bag fits into your lifestyle and intended purposes. For more differences on the Birkin versus the Kelly, visit our Hermes 101 feature.
