One important element of our travel series is always the detailed price comparisons that we have coined as ‘handbag math‘. Handbag math – the art of comparing prices of bags in euros to prices here in the United States – is a trademark calculation here at PurseBop.

Hopefully, by now, over the last couple of years, we have convinced you that shopping for Hermès in France is by far the best deal of all the luxury brands (read: Hermes Is Your Best Buy In Paris), despite the annual small price increases in Europe (read: Hermes Increases Prices 2017). The savings have definitely decreased over the past three years with the euro having gained strength against the US dollar and there being no price increase in the US for the last three years.

Bottom line: While buying at the Paris mothership certainly may be the experience of a lifetime, saving up and planning a trip around that probably is not worth the financial savings. Increased production and supply around the world may make purchasing at your local store the wiser move, in which case, build those relationships with your store Sales Associates.

We saw the greatest change to Chanel prices back in April 2015 when Chanel equalized its prices globally to compensate for currency fluctuations (read: Global Price Implications on Chanel Street). The new pricing scheme has enabled the French house to offer products at a “harmonized” price to customers wherever they are in the world. The only minor differences arise from intermittent currency fluctuations, VAT refunds and customs duties. Chanel is slightly cheaper.

Bottom line: Buy the Chanel you love where and when you find it. As we expected, Chanel’s strategy of global price equalization has resulted in nominal cost differences (other than possible savings due to duty and/or taxes). We also have learned that inventory varies from country to country and location to location, so what you saw, for example, on Rue Cambon in Paris, may not be available on Madison Avenue in NYC, or vice versa. This is especially true for special pieces, where supply is limited.
